I'd like to see some promos with Long Distance hiking in mind. Looks quite bulky as well.

NOPE, not at all. It's based on terrestrial GSM networks. Therefore anywhere on the AT or the country for that matter that doesn't have TMobile or ATT coverage, it won't work. At least the SPOT signal is based on commercial satellites.

Probably not especially since it doesn't have a 911 button. And since the SPOT2 appears to have all the doggie things about SPOT fixed.

I was thinking of my wife being able to track my progress on the trail for her peace-of-mind that things were fine, but if you need to be within cell phone coverage it has very limited use. Too bad. Sooner or later though, something with a combination of a SPOT unit and a GPS gadget like this will show up.

One thing that drives me crazy is this description that I see everywhere:

The built-in rechargeable Li-ion battery can last up to four weeks between charges

Is that completely on and tracking, in standby, some low power hybrid mode, in standby/off?

Up to 4 weeks = about 5 hours :)
