Is there a hostel there? The hotels are pricey for just a place to shower, sleep and watch tv, and they seem to be booking up quickly.

I stayed at a hotel in Buena Vista that was awful. Way overpriced and the room he first gave me was filthy with mold. It was that blue hotel next to Subway, across from Burger King. Don't let Mr. Patel send you to the rooms in the back. You want a room in the front!!! The hostel must be new, wasn't there when I visited. I'd stay at the hostel.

Wild Bill moved to Leadville from the Mississipi delta country, not TN. He talked to us about how he represented black blues singers down that way.

Lilred, I think this OP is talking about Buena Vista, Colorado, but just can't be bothered to type two extra characters for the benefit of all or us on this APPALACHIAN TRAIL Enthusiast site.

It may not be something you're looking for. There're a crazy annual 100 mile mt. biking and 100 mile marathon around Leadville when I stayed there in mid August. The rooms were full. And they sent me further up hill to an open land which was said to be a public land for overnight. Yeah, that land might be a private property, cause I heard a person walking behind my tent for quite a few seconds after 11 PM! It really did scare me a little.

But the Leadville Hostel is nice one. You can get back to the trail by paying them $15?

I met a really nice lady section hiking the CDT who lives in Buena Vista and seemed interested in trail angeling me when I came through CO. Didn't end up making it to Buena Vista though, so I can't give any specifics (since it's like a day apart from Twin Lakes and Salida on the CDT, didn't seem worth the extra time). PM me and I'll send you her contact. Of course, call her way ahead of time just to make sure it's ok.

It was directed at Rain Man, not you.

He's the one complaining about a user not specifying it was a non-AT question. Bitching more like it. As he does often about non-AT items. As this is a non-AT forum..... Well, not exactly obtuse. ;)

I was there on August 22nd and there was some sort of race in the area then too. Combined with the weekend crowds the whole town was completely booked up. There are a number of hotels however, so if you hit on a normal day you should find space. I got lucky and somebody's reservation cancelled, and I got a room for $65 or so. I didn't think the price was that bad, especially considering the circumstances. Most hostels were around $30 anyways, and its a short trail, so...

Other alternatives are there is a campground with showers and laundry about a mile and a half north of downtown. I think they were going to charge me $15. Also, the laundromat on Rt. 24 next to Pancho's (most awesome burritos) has a shower. So you could get in in the morning, get a burrito, shower and laundry and get back out to the trail.

I'm not sure how the hostel in Leadville is going to help. Yes, Wild Bill could pick you up in BV for some fee, and then take you back the next morning for another fee. But it is 45 minutes away, and this does not count the 20+ minute hitch to get from the trail to BV. Also by the time you are done you've probably spent more money shuttling than on a hotel. My recommendation is to go with a hotel, or just go with the laundromat. Have fun!
