Cash, but you can usually work your hike so you can camp in between the pay sites. I didn't pay at all in VT

I thought for the AT portion of VT only a few shelters had fees - Stratton Pond, Little Rock Pond, maybe Griffith Lake.

it was 5 bucks. i kept my receipt so i was able to stay at the other pay sites for free. it wasn't a big deal.

It costs to camp in VT? I must have missed it completely.

Cookerhiker got the fee sites exactly right....and yes one $5 bill pays for all the sites on the AT in Vermont.

Funny how many NOBO thruhikers grumble about having to pay to sleep in the woods and SOBO's think it's a bargin. Guess it's all a matter of what you have been used to paying.

Ha Ha

Yeah in certain areas, near the ponds, where the LT and AT share

I found also you didn't need to pay if the caretakers were switching that day.

Yes we have just come through the AMC Whites :D

NOBOs by then are getting broke.

Still I didnt like the idea of paying. So I just hiked on another half mile. Most who did pay were weekenders.

Unless something has changed since I was a caretaker and collected overnight fees in VT, those fees are the caretakers salery. A small price to pay.

i was able to get some "work for stay" in VT and NH at some campsites, but if not you'd be better off hiking the extra mile or so and staying at the shelter

I thought it was well worth the $5 to stay at Straton Pond, that's a beautiful area.

That is exactly why it is now such a beautiful place. Prior to the caretakers there were piles of garbage. I certainly agree about it being well worth it. As Lone Wolf said there is plenty of good camping before or after these few areas.:welcome
