Due to some painful and unforeseen medical expenses (OUCH), my thru-hike has turned into a hopefully half-way-or-so section hike. Financially, I just don't have the funds to make it the whole way, but I don't want to just give up. So, I'll be hiking as far as I can on what I've got, and enjoy a few months in the woods.

My question is this: I was originally going to leave on my birthday, 3/15 - giving myself extra time to get to Katahdin before October since my initial pace will be pretty slow. Now that I don't have that deadline to worry about, what do you feel would be the prettiest date to head out to Springer? Doesn't have to be terribly warm, but warmish would be nice, and I'd love to catch some spring instead of late winter. Would mid-April be best, or would you recommend waiting even later?

I agree with LW. March is still winter in the mountains. By late April and May you should start seeing the blooming trees, vines, and wildflowers. I can be glorious!

I'm a fan of winter and snow, so I'd probably just stick with mid-march.

Section hiking is a great way to go. You can take your time and enjoy some really wonderful sights without deadlines. So have a great time!

Thanks everyone! I think I'll move it back to mid-April. @Blissful, I can't complain about a few months in the woods. Hopefully I can save up and finish my hike next year. :D

Like Blissful said, section hiking is great. You get to go where you want, when you want, at any speed you want, in the direction you want. For me the only hard part is figuring out where to park and who to get a shuttle with. And even then there's plenty of help if you ask around.
Enjoy your hike!

And if it gets in your blood like it does me, probably easier to save for it. :)

You will be surprised how far you can stretch a buck if you really want to stay out there.

And yes, mid April is perfect.
