In percentages how twisted are people that hike the trail

Does 5% mean that 5% of the people on the trail are twisted, or that all of the people on the trail are 5% twisted? Very ambiguous poll!

I think it means that 100% of the people are twisted 5% of the time.

Oh, I understood it to mean they were twisted like those trees that try to follow the sun - therefore I voted 5% to cover those LD hikers that are up before the sun and end their day with a head lamp on. :sun

I will just rely on my wife's opinion for the answer and assume that I am twisted.

It's all a matter of perspective and, of course, degree.

This question kinda reminds me of people talking about the "return to normal life" when we hit Katahdin last year.

If you combine this poll with the AT Sex thread you'll get the percentage of hikers who do nude twister in shelters.

Brushing up against the sweaty skin of any nude hiker and having to hold that position on a twister sheet after five days of hiking in the rain in the summer heat of New York would cause my insurance company to cancel my coverage if they ever found out about it.

Poll not clear enough, please clarify! I think part of being human is to be twisted, and we're twisted by many forces - television, peer groups, society, religion, money, etc.

Actually too deep of a subject for me to go into now but for the most part I would say that hikers would generally be less twisted than the normals in our society. Why? Well, unlike 90% of our TV driven dreamlanders they are out there using their legs and experiencing nature directly, seeking to experience something greater than themselves and finding it in nature.

Judging by this and all the other threads about nothing, I think the winter season is getting everyone on WB a little twisted.

I did a quick 2 miles yesterday to a small summit in a nearby State Forest and it did help clear the cobwebs.

When my husband begin his thru-hike he was about 5% twist, 80% normal, 15% somewhere in between. When he finished he was 50% twisted and the other 50% was somewhere between twisted and really f*****d up! And, as a bonus, he started off as a hiker with a drinking problem and ended up as a DRINKER with a HIKING problem! hikerwife

MUCH madness is divinest sense To a discerning eye; Much sense the starkest madness. ’T is the majority In this, as all, prevails. 5 Assent, and you are sane; Demur,—you ’re straightway dangerous, And handled with a chain.

So as others said, who's definition?

Personally, I like softserve twist icecream on a hot July day.....

How twisted? Twisted enough to reject the dominant paradigm. Twisted enough to know that the world of work (a modern corporate-inspired version of slavery) is unnatural. Twisted enough to accept oneself as a wild animal among wild animals.

Think about the life of a bobcat. They are so good at hunting that they spend very little time doing it. Instead, they can loll about, sleeping, napping, dozing, looking for mates or playing or whatever. Now human beings.

We're supposed to be intelligent animals. But we spend much of our lives performing repetitive tasks, the most mundane drudgery that most respectable wild animals would never dream of doing. Indeed, I'd bet they'd die first.

Now imagine a bobcat entering into a contract that required him to only be with one female, period. He'd be breaking the contract the first day, because his DNA drives him to seek the females that overlap his territory. That's a driving force in a bobcat's life.

Am I saying that we are bobcats? No. But I am saying that we would be much better off if our laws, customs, social mores conformed more closely with our biology.

A lot of us get that eery feeling when we step onto the AT, that we're home, even though we just left home. I'm sure there's a good reason for that feeling. And that reason is simple. We've come back, to our ancestral home.

SGT Rock
05-03-2005, 09:33
Well I ain't a bobcat, I guess more like a wolf because I am happy to have a mate for life. But when you talk about feeling like I am home every time I get on the trail I think you are right on the money.

first time I used my HHammock, I woke up to answer nature's call and found myself twisted to the point that I was laying on the mosquito net and the escape hatch was over my head. don't know how I did that without hurting either myself or the hammock, but I'm sure it qualifies me as twisted.:p
