This older retired lady did her "adventure run" on the AT in 2005 and wrote a veritable book on the experience. It's all good reading, and good trail information. It was fun to communicate with Sue during that run, and see her answer in her daily blog post! She had a lot of advantages, such as a husband supporting her with the family RV, and both being retired they seemed to have adequate time and money to spend.
Nice people and a great resource. Shows that trail runners don't have to be young, elite, or even very fast to go out there and make a good go of it.
