I recently bought a DVD on the AT called TREK. While watching it with a few of my friends, one of them (who was high at the time) kept commenting on how he thought they were all really high, and referred to them a pot smoking hippies. Now, im obviously not gonna take the advice of a kid who knows nothing about the AT. I have nothing against pot, used to smoke it myself, but my friend seems to have the idea that its a bunch of hippies hanging out in the woods smoking weed. From my very short time here on WB, most posters are not ones I would categorize as 'hippies'.
Anyway, long story short. Anyone notice the smoking of the pots on the trail?

You'll see lots of things on the Trail. People from all walks of life. Even people who enjoy cannabis.

I personally haven't seent it (or smelled it either) on the AT, but it does exist.

Sure they smoke out there. They passed it in front of my 16 yr old while I was asleep (he told me about it later).

Yes, there are people smoking pot out there, just like everywhere else, including WalMart.
Doesn't mean they are all hippies though. This thread cracks me up.

I quit smoking pot while on my thru in 2006. I packed an ounce and smoked until it was gaone and haven't smoked since...;)

I of course don't know L.W. but the mental image of him narcing to the po-po in VA for some reason makes me laugh a little bit. Not sure why, but it does.

Second that! I carry a large air-horn (got the idea from the bear safety thread) and whenever I see a reefer come my way I give'm a blast the the old sound cannon just for good measure.

aaaand to answer the original question, yes. there is lots of the smoking of the pots on the trail. however, it has been my experience that if you go looking for it you're going to find it. if you don't go looking for it, you probably won't. that being said, there are some idiots out there that have no respect for other people's experience on the trail, same as in normal life. either say something (if it's at a shelter and bothering you), or just keep walking. it's not very hard to deal with.

Seriously though, it is an annoying stereotype. There are plenty that do partake, but you wouldn't know it unless you asked. In my experience they are more than willing to steer clear of those who don't want to be around it.
I realized that my partying days were long behind me last summer when a guy we were talking to a water source asked us if we blazed and I assumed he was asking if I had taken a shortcut on the trail.

I'm surprised there aren't police out there posing as hikers. Probably will be now.
And I'm surprised there aren't hikers posing as police, since there's so much lawbreaking going on, and you'd HAVE to make them surrender their stash to The Law.
