Also, I spent a lot of time on the AT when I was a Boy Scout 20 years ago. Well... it felt like a long time. Compared to what thru-hikers do it was just a series of short weekend trips.
Anyhow, we always used tents.

Is there much use of hammock for shelter along the AT?

I think hammocks started out along the AT.... they're more popular out there than out here, for sure.
