Idiots, but I was young once too, would like to hike last week of Feb/first week of March. I think the lower elevations north of Rockfish might be better than the mountains in GA. What is the temp difference? We will evaluate non temperature variables, ie escape routes versus coolness of thru hikers.

The A.T. in northern Virginia (north of Shenandoah National Park) and Maryland sometimes, but not always, have warmer temps and less snow than anywhere else on the Trail. Georgia, on average, is a little less cold overall, but Blood Mtn. and higher peaks can have more snowfall and colder temps, on average, than these sections. In February, the ground in northern VA/MD can be bare, or it can be icy, or with just an inch or two of snow. Rarely, there may be up to three feet of snow. One advantage, in terms of safety, is that northern Virginia and Maryland are not nearly as remote, and the mountains are not as high. There are also 2 hostels in northern Virginia, one in Harpers Ferry, and one in Maryland.
