:-? Does one really need to register to hike the John Muir ?
Knowing how one's schedule can change at a whip stitch ...

Anyone know any one who has hiked the JMT w/o registering ?

Right, the one trail where rangers live in cabins all season long at regular intervals to check your permit and your bear canister?

Get a walk in permit if you can't nail down a schedule.

I never reserved a permit before starting in over 15 hikes. The only thing that is somewhat iffy is to get a permit at Happy Isles, as it is a very high demand trailhead. Anywhere else or with somet patience in case you don't get your walk-in permit at Happy Isles, and you can probably start whenever you feel ready.

You only need a permit for entry, you don't have to reserve a campsite each night (unlike some other NPs like Glacier and Yellowstone). It's not that difficult. And yes, you are very likely to run into rangers who will ask for your permit.

I got my permit for HI after a bit of a headache, but we are set to go (got the letter from the Yosemite people yesterday confirming). Got our airline tickets yesterday too.

Congrats on getting your permit Blissful. My wife and I are planning on a thru hike a little after you, so we will be playing that rat race soon enough.
We were looking at flights last night, I was just wondering what you decided to do flight wise; into San Fran. and out Reno or something else?

We're flying into SF to do a few days touring, then on with public transportation to Yosemite Valley
