I thought everyone would be intrested in this old mine shaft I stumbled upon while hiking in the Cloudcroft area of New Mexico. I didnt go in or get too close, I wasnt on a marked trail, was by myself and honestly didnt know were I was. I did know if I kept the highest peak behind me I'd hit the desert sonner or later.

Mnt Lion is a good reason not to go in.

I lived in the Cloudcroft area for several years (twin forks, silver cloud). I'm quite curious as to where this is.

I came out between Boles acres and Alamogordo. It was about 12 miles up the mountain. As I said I was not on a trail.

So, maybe due south of High Rolls? I used to do a lot of mountain biking in that area, but not too much west of high rolls. Did you get coordinates of the location? Could you find it again?

I think I could get lost in the same area but I would take more water and a tent instead of a hammock. I started at Alamo peak, crossed West side rd and down from there. I did alot of backtracking trying to find a safe way down.
There are alot of mines in this area and alot of them are marked on the Lincoln co BLM maps. I didnt check to see if this one is marked.

I think the gas and lack of oxygen is a good reason not to go in.

Theres a bunch of abandoned mine shafts around the grand canyon too.

We have those in PA too, however they are often flammable. Your campfire might take over 100 years to go out.

They just put up scary gas signs to keep the tourons out. Less work for the FS.

This is what can happen if you start burning too much near the wrong mine entrance in PA: http://www.pahighways.com/features/centralia.html
