I assume the Smokies are getting hit with the latest snow storm--correct? Has anyone been on the trail from Dicks Creek Gap through the Smokies and wondering if the road into Newfound Gap is being kept open.
Also, where is the best place to resupply or have a food drop sent when coming out of the Smokies.
Thanks for the help---more snow last night here in Indiana.

441 is closed in the park (Gatlinburg to Cherokee).

The snow hasn't actually been to bad in the Smokies yet. Newfound Gap Rd has been closed a couple of times, but is open currently. Here's the # for Smoky Mountain info 865-436-1200. However, I will tell you the recording has told me roads were closed before and when I went into the park, they weren't.

I know of at least 1 AT hiker in the park going south right now.

I maybe mistaken, but it was open and the road closing info says nothing about it being closed.

Gatlinburg to Hot Springs is only 70 miles. Some resupply at Standing Bear Farm just outside the GSMNP.

Both the website and the telephone recording report the road as closed.

The local news is calling for 6" in the higher elevations of the NC/TN border counties later today, but all counties north and west of Asheville already dismissed school, I heard it is already snowing up there. Earlier than predicted.

That's hilarious, I just called to check and the only one closed besides all the roads that close for winter was the construction area of foothills parkway. I'll be up there tomorrow so I'll check with my own eyes.

Ahhh, the first part of it was cut off the first time I called it. Thanks for the heads up. The weather is supposed to get better towards the weekend so it should be open soon.

I will be hiking the park this weekend for 4 days, will let you know what it is like when I return. The conditions and roads change by the hour so you never know, just go with the flow !

here's an idea: If you make it up & park at New Found Gap, take some skis with you. That way you can ski down to either Gatlinburg or Cherokee when you return & your car is burried in 4' of snow. : )
