Thinking about heading up to Harriman/Fahnstock area tomorrow for a New yrs eve jaunt with my brother. Can anyone living near there or having recently hiked there tell me if there is a lot of ice on the trails now? We got a couple light snows here in NYC, so it's hard to tell.

Thanks a lot. Picking a route depends on whether the climbs and descents are ice filled, as we don't have crampons.

I have friends who were there yesterday, they say there's very little ice.

I've walked through that area in the snow over several different winters. Ice was never a problem for most of the section (assuming no recent ice storm) except on some of the short steep climbs where snowmelt or running water has frozen, but even then they were passable with care. The trailway itself was surprisingly obvious, even atop the ridgelines where no one had walked since the last snowfall.
