I have been reading several journals lately. I was wondering (for those more wizzend than myself, which is most of you...) what is typicaly the earliest expected start date to get though the Smokies in winter? Obviously Flyin' Brian did it with a January 1, but I was refering to the rest of us mortals?

Obviously, weather will vary from year to year. Just trying to get a general idea.

Leaving anytime before the 1st of March is just crazy to me but HYOH.

Cheers!

There is no "normal". Lots of people have started Jan. 1st in the past. I just depends on what you can tolerate.

Seems like the majority leave anywhere between the 1st week of March to the 1st week of April. More folks starting in Feb. and there are always that handful that leave in Jan., even New Year's Day.

Go now - beat the crowds - really, I'm serious - there is snow in NC right now and some patches in GA (I did 20 miles last weekend) but by the time you get to GSMNP it will be melting (maybe) and if you hit some really bad weather, just take a zero (or two) - you are going to hit cold rain, sleet, fog , etc. anyway, so just go do it (if you want to) HYOH!
