Last October, on my section hike from Davenport Gap to Hot Springs, NC, I met a couple from New England at the Groundhog Creek Shelter. They were hiking the opposite direction as me and had a car at Lemon Gap and one car at Davenport Gap.
When I got to Lemon Gap the next day, I saw that their car was broken in to. Bastards smashed the rear window to open the door and ransacked the car.
The guidebooks I read said to be wary of leaving your car overnight at Lemon Gap for that very reason.
Sadly, the guidebook was still up to date.
