At Clingmans the Feb average high and low are 35-18 with an average of 20 inches of snow during the month.

So, statistically speaking, your question would be better phrased as "How much higher do you think the snow will be in early March?" :)

The road to Clingmans doesn't open til 3/31.

Good stuff, my next question would be does anyone know how well the trails are marked in the high altitude sections near clingmans? if theres still that much snow would they be covered in any way?

The weather forcast for the Smokies are showing extreme winds tonight--perhaps gusts of up to 70 mph so it should be interesting at high elevations with snow --ice and downed trees and limbs.
Would appreciate an update from anyone in the area.

here's the weather cam for Lookrock which is at the western end of the Smokies looking east. it also has some weather info. check it out during daylight for a hint on the weather. keep in mind that snow and ice will persist in shaded areas of the trail long after the snow has melted or blown off the trees.

To answer the original question...there is currently no snow on or around Springer. Snow and ice maybe on Friday. Forget the snow shoes for GA.

I kinda figured no snowshoes for Ga but the way its looking i will need them for the smokies hitting cligmans dome sometime in the second week of march

Clingmans Dome has around 20" right now. That is based on a similar elevation at Mt. LeConte. Check this site out for daily updates.http://www.srh.noaa.gov/productview.php?pil=RTPMRX

It's possible that 30" more inches fell between 7am this morning and now but I doubt it. Call the Park Service at 865-436-1200 to get the latest.

I started on feb 14, and found snowshoes an impediment. Blowdowns so numerous, and weight of shoes made it not worth it.

I noticed some tracks out there, but never met a thru hiker with them.
