View Full Version : Running on ice/snow -- cleats?

I can't afford to miss more training days because of icy roads, and treadmills I find to be all but pointless.

Runners World has brief descriptions of three types of cleats: YakTrax Pro, Petzl Spiky Plus, and Stabilicers Sport.

Has anyone used these for running? Good? Bad? Indifferent? Curious how many miles of use I can expect.

I can hear John Gault laughing his azz off, warm and ice-free in Florida.

www.icetrekkers.com (http://www.icetrekkers.com) has the best.
The Diamond Grips are for rock/snow/ice, and are extremely durable.
Hiking or running, these do not effect your stride
No points to trip you or twist on mixed terrain.

Yes, I am the rep.

I'll second that

I bought a pair of Ice Trekkers a couple of days before the snow/ice storm hit Atlanta. Perfect time to try them out, I walked 4-miles on 2" of ice, my feet felt as stable as walking on a dry surface, no slipping or sliding. I didn’t notice any difference in the way my shoes felt or the way I walked, very comfortable. They’re easy to put on and remove, compact, weight for a size M 10-ounces.

no I'm not a rep.

I use Kahtoola Microspikes when it's glare ice -otherwise i just screw hex head sheet metal screws into my goretex trail runners. I haven't used the kahtoolas at all this winter only my screw shoes. I replace the screws once a week (50-60 miles/week). A box of 100 at Lowe's <$4 best deal in town.

I use the Yaktrax Pro. Simple and easy... ran in the Atlanta ice and snow a few weeks ago, and been using them in tough western NC snows all winter. My boyfriend uses Microspikes and loves those too. Personal preference I suppose. I feel like Yaktrax Pros are better "all-around" with the minimalist design of the coils. But for deeper post-holing/but not quite snowshoe weather... I would say Microspikes would be better.

Meant for trail running, this article gives a great overview for traction devices for lighter footwear. (http://web.archive.org/web/20080503033404/http://www.mountainrunning.com/features/february_08/index.html) The only review missing is for in-step (4 pt) crampons. (http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___33054?CS_003=2477120&CS_010=33054) In-step crampons are a bit impractical for trailrunning and/or for some lighter footwear. However, if you use traditional boots, the four pt. crampons have proven to be a good option for hikers in icy, but non-technical, conditions.

Our whole running club up here in Maine uses the Spiky Ice Cleat. We tried a few other products over the years but these have held up the best, the spike didn't wear down, and you could really barely tell your wearing them. The company doesn't really market them as running gear, but I think they are best out there. German made none of the chinese stuff. 30 bucks a pair but they should last you a few seasons i know mine do. www.spiky.com (http://www.spiky.com)

Yeah Im with JR. I think the Spiky Ice Cleat is probably the best one on the market. The yaktrak does well on hard pack snow but the Spiky Ice cleat I would say out preforms just about every product out there when it comes to running on ice/concrete/snow/slush stuff. We own a running store in southern vermont and it's the most popular out of the ice cleats. Petzl sells a similar product but i would go with the original from the spiky at www.spiky.com (http://www.spiky.com)

The Inov-8 OROC 280 has built in cleats. I haven't used or looked up reviews, but it may be worth it for you to check them out.

There's also the OROC 350:
