Are there sections of the trail notorious for heavy poison ivy? What about from Davenport Gap to Hot Springs?

Great question. I look at the stuff and get it.

I don't remember any on this section but if I remember right from Springer to Hot Springs I seen some on the trees near the trail but none that I was unable to avoid. I hiked first 2 weeks of May 09

I saw a ton of poison ivy just north of Pearisburg, before the serious ascent of Peters Mountain. The trail was overgrown to boot, and I was carefully moving tendrils away with my poles. Fortunately, I don't think that I'm terribly sensitive to poison ivy and did not have any symptoms.

You only have to worry about it south of Maine and below 4,000 ft. ;).
Unless the trail crews take care of it you will deal with it from time to time, mostly at the edges of fields and along roads.

Just be leery of it anywhere the trail is overgrown .
Also be aware where the trail empties into a field or shoulders road crossings. The trail does this with regurality in SNP with 48 crossings of the Skyline Drive.
