(Atlanta, GA) – Three years ago the community lost a beautiful, young woman, Meredith Hope Emerson. Her life was taken after she was abducted while hiking in the North Georgia Mountains on New Year’s Day, 2008. In response, friends and co-workers created a non-profit foundation, Right To Hike, Inc., which is dedicated to celebrating the life of Meredith Hope Emerson through raising funds and awareness for causes close to Meredith's heart. They honor her memory by sharing her courage, love of the outdoors and belief that all people have the right to live without fear.
The original idea was to plan a tribute concert in Meredith’s memory, but the group decided to expand their ideas and an entire charity organization was born. Right to Hike, Inc. has hosted three very successful 5k races and other numerous events throughout the Atlanta Region in order to remember Meredith and raise funds necessary for specific initiatives. All the while, the initial idea of the concert event has remained in the forefront of their mission and now on April 9th, 2011, that dream will become reality.
The Indigo Girls will make a guest appearance at the Appreciation Banquet, “An Evening of Hope,” and perform a few songs which is to be held at Gwinnett Center’s Thomas “Tommy” Hughes Grand Ballroom. The event will consist of a seated dinner followed by music by Emerson’s favorite band, The Indigo Girls. “We could not be more thrilled that The Indigo Girls will be a part of this event! Meredith loved their music and she went and saw them every chance she had. She even had tickets to see them in February of 2008, so we feel this will be the show for Meredith that she was never able to see, it will be a truly amazing evening,” says Julia Karrenbauer, President of Right to Hike, Inc.
Also performing to conclude the evening will be local band, Reality Check. The group has been a part of many of the events that Right to Hike, Inc. has hosted and it will be a perfect and enjoyable way to end the evening. Guests will also be able to participate in silent and live auctions to raise additional funds for the organization.
The group plans to use these raised funds to continue their endeavor of donating emergency cell phone units to local trail systems, which is meant to expand safety measures already in place by local communities for individuals and families to enjoy the outdoors. Also, Right to Hike, Inc. will further support the Meredith Hope Emerson Study Abroad Scholarship established at The University of Georgia by donating specific funds.
This event will be the platform for the group to launch a new initiative to educate and encourage other states to enact similar protections to those granted by The Meredith Emerson Memorial Privacy Act. “We believe there is no greater purpose than to raise awareness and pass this law state by state. We may not have been able to save Meredith, but we can honor her memory and spirit by creating true change in this nation,” says Right to Hike Inc.’s Vice President, Brent Seyler.
Tickets will be available for purchase by visiting www.righttohikeinc.com (http://www.righttohikeinc.com) beginning on February 6, 2011 at 10:00 a.m., for $75.00 per ticket. Tickets will be limited and sold on a first-come-first-served basis. All proceeds will go to help continue the goals of Right to Hike, Inc. Information for sponsorships and auction donations are also available on the Web site.
