I need some help. My friend and I were all set to go to the Smokies this weekend to play in all the snow they had down there. We bought snow shoes and everything. Well now all the snow they had melted from the week or so of warm weather. We're considering rerouting our trip somewhere north so these snow shoes don't go to waste.

How far north should we go? Virginia, New York ?

Thanks,

Matt

Did you go up to 5000 to 6000 ft? If not you may still find some snow up there.....not been there myself this year so don't know for sure..

I'm basing my information off the parks website which says only 8 inches of snow on Mt. Leconte right now. Also the winter caretaker of the lodge has an online blog and he says most of the snow is gone...that snow shoes used to be needed up there but not currently.

Do you only want to snowshoe on the AT? If you're open to other areas, give a call to Blackwater Falls State Park (http://www.blackwaterfalls.com/) in West Virginia and ask about conditions. This Park is at over 3,000' on the Allegheny Plateau and usually has snow.

Doesn't have to be the AT. Thanks, I'll check into it.

OK good to hear...looks like you did the research you needed to do....also good to know it's not waist deep anymore as I plan to hike through it from Fontana Dam to Davenport Gap near the last of March and even though I would welcome some snow I don't really want to fight the waist deep snow that the site said was there about 2 or 3 weeks ago at the higher alts
