A friend informed Lone Wolf this morning that Paw Paw, a well known and loved AT hiker, passed away in his sleep last night. He was a WWII veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor. He will be greatly missed.

RIP Paw Paw. He was one of my favorite people I met back in 1998. And he was old back then too! Hell of a guy, I spent an evening just listening to him tell stories.

pawpaw was a lady killer. he had all the luck. we talked about pawpaws. hes the one who finaly convinsed me what they look like when i wasnt sure what i had been eating for so many years. it was pawpaw from a tree in pa. its the only pawpaw on the trail between duncannon and water gap. anyone ever seen it? next time i walk by it i might sto. and if i start talking out loud to paw paw, ill tell him how much fun he was and how loved and how much of a mans man he was. pawpaw was real good people. it just cant be said enough.

Yes he was. I only met him a few times, but he was always surrounded by hikers of the fairer sex. Here he is with my lovely wife, Dragonfly (https://picasaweb.google.com/bennett.ken/2010MayHikeInTennessee#5470921698436518194), last May in Damascus.

RIP.

I remember that tree. As I recall it is in the corner of an old wooden fence area right next to the trail. Another hiker told us about the fruit and we watched for the tree. Wish we'd met Paw Paw as he sounds like another great part of the AT. May he rest in peace.

Gypsy: Thanks for passing this sad news along to us.

Pawpaw loved his country, his family, his friends, and the Trail. I never saw him when he didn't have a great attitude, a kind word for everyone he met, and always, a big smile. He will be very much missed.

Paw Paw was one cool old dude; that's probably why they named the tunnel on the C & O Canal after him.

May he rest in peace...

A great old guy. I met him on the summit of Saddleback during the Wingfoot effort to protect the trail over that mountain. He attributed his longevity and hiking ability to the judicious consumption of bourbon.

Thank you Gypsy for passing along this very sad news.
I wish I could give all the Hobo's a hug right now. My condolences to Paw Paw's family and friends.
Paw Paw was a true American and Veteran, a Blue Blazer who walked the whites, and a true character indeed. I sat with him many times over the years, mainly at Dot's and Dave's Place, where he recounted his stories of the trail, the war, and his family.., 'and he had some good ones'. I am dedicating our 'Winter Warmer' in his honor.

Rest in peace Paw Paw.

RIP. He shared a sideways comment with me in Dots a few years ago that came out of the blue and was very funny. Don't think I'll share it...I'll keep it now.
