I have the REI pack/stuffsack Flash 18 summit pack or whatever you want to call it. It's a few ounces heavier than your average stuffsack, but I was wondering if it was worth it to bring it along on a through for slackpacking and the likes.

I'm not looking to ultralight, just to have a nice, long hike.

I have one of the Flash 18's and I use it for trips where I basecamp and need a dayhiking pack. I think it would be overkill for a thru tho. I guess it depends on your overall packweight, but YMMV so hyoh.

Unless you have slackpacks set up already, it'd be a waste to carry this "just in case." You may find that things have a way or working themselves out, and that this, or any item not used on a daily basis, is not necessary. Simplicity.

So much extra stuff gets mailed home at Walsi-yi each year that's brought along with the same "what if" intentions. Bring the flash pack, and a few extra bucks "just in case" you decide to mail it home after the first 30 miles. You'll more than likely know by then what you need, and what you don't.
