Wife is bringing me down this Wednesday --Feb 16th and we are going to have a couple of days of R&R--drop off some food drops. Plan is to start back on Feb 19th.
Biting and the bit to roll on and enjoy the nice weather we are finally getting.

Me and my wife Willsee are starting at Springer friday morning. Its been a long year of planning to now its just days away! Can't wait.
I'm set to start March 3rd on the approach trail. Less than 3 weeks. Yikes! =)
I'm eager to start, but worried about snowy weather. I'm a fast hiker too, so going slow to cope with bad snow in the beginning isn't something that I want to do. Anyone have links to good journals where people hiked through snowy conditions at the start? What's it like?

if the hikers would please turn over your left shoulder strap, i have placed a golden key there for each of you. it is the guest key to rm 23.enjoy. and remember, the drawer in the mirror in the hall outside 23 is filled with every concevable art supply and kite or frissbee fun for you to use.

Good luck - be careful and slow down on the ice. I don't think you can turn into a skid on the trail and come out of it OK!!

Hey Mountain Squid. I just got done talking with Rockhound. He says he met you while hiking in Shady Valley a few years ago. Anyways, he started on the approach trail on Feb 13th and got through the Smokies yesterday.

Anyways, he started on the approach trail on Feb 13th and got through the Smokies yesterday.Rockhound has a good memory. I had to check my notes and I did meet Rockhound in 2009 near Shady Valley.
Did he happen to mention the condition of the Smokies? Was there any snow? I'm sure there are more than a few that would be interested to know what to expect thru the Smokies . . .
(If Rockhound wants to be added to the spreadsheet I need to know what his WhiteBlaze username is.)

And the Smokies still have a lot of sections of packed snow and ice from before Clingmans dome to after tricorner knob shelter but he says it is not nearly as bad as years past in Feb.

And more weather warnings. Frozen fog settled on Fort Mountain just west of Springer. A very pretty layer of ice on the summit.

Planning on spending this Sat night (19th) at the Ami Falls shelter and then heading out first thing the next morning. Anyone else doing the same? Would love to compare plans/gear/weight/resupplies before I hit it.
General info for me. 25lb pack, 15 resupply points, 15-20 miles a day, some 30 milers planned. Im Eric

Make sure you watch out for any hot spots on the feet . . . take lots of breaks and let your feet air out before blisters appear . . .

unfortunately, i have yet to sell my truck. =( but it's in the newspaper, on craigslist, AND it's sitting in the "lemon lot" on the air force base. it's bound to sell soon, right? =(

Well, I'm off tomorrow morning, the 24th. Just weighed my pack with all gear and 5 days food with 2 liters of water. She came in at 22.5 pounds total. Sure hope I can stay motivated to finish again. Good luck to everyone.
