While walking the ridge trail @ Massanutten in VA (near Elkton) this afternoon I came across what appears to me to be a rather large partial track. I looked around and could not find any other tracks in the area, but it was very rocky and this was in the only soil in the area.

Is this a track or just looks like one?
In the second pic I placed my trekking pole grip there for size. It's just over 5 inches.

Also on the same hike I came across scat as well, what left this please?

After seeing it I have to admit, part of me was hoping it wasn't left by an animal that may still be there

I agree to both. The rear pad on the print looks to be a perfect circle. Just not natural.

I agree, as well.

And, if you look closely, there is a hint that the "track" wasn't made as a single impression (footstep). The largest depression (center) spilled-over into the depression on the right. If this was made as a single footstep, the center impression would have not pushed dirt into adjacent impressions.

I'm guessing someone was having fun pressing a rock in the mud.

someone picked up 3 stones and threw them at a cyotee to chase it away.

I think Mantracker would tell you that the tracks were made by a human.

The scat could be a coyote, but it could also be a dog.

I own a dog and unfortunatley have up close and personal experience with it's waste. Do you really think I'd post a picture of dog ***** and ask for help classifying it? I may be a partial @ss from time to time, but take objection to being treated like a hole @ss.

And my next published work will be;

"Does A Bear Sh&t in the Woods?, Yes and this is what it looks like"

To include every critter's droppings on the AT

You should print that in a "scratch and sniff" edition for those who wish to immerse themselves in the experience.

After you calm down some, you might consider editing this.

My first thought was dog poo, even tho it was quite black. Hard for me to see hair in it. The "round footprint" might have been some item like a water bottle.

Yes I have a dog. After you find tinsel in the poo as it melts out of the ice...

If it were a dog, it would be a dog that was surviving on the same diet a coyote, wolf, other wild animals would be eating.

Please give me just a bit of credit.

I'm not able to edit my posts, but even if I were, I see no reason to, but thanks for the advice.

The tracklike footprint did look just a little to "placed" for me to completely believe it's authenticity. That "too round" round pad impression is what made it look strange to me as well.

The fact that I wasn't able to find any other evidence in the area made me "hope" that what ever made it was either very far away or an animal of the 2 legged variety.

Seeing wildlife is special.
Possibly seeing large "wildlife", while alone, a good distance from others, on a narrow ridgeline with no where else to go of a variety that you can not readilly identify......... makes thoughts run through your mind.

Your probably right....... I heard Bigfoot has a DOG that he was given when he met up with time travelers from a distant planet.

That would certainly explain everything, thanks for solving the mysteries.

my first reaction when seeing the foot print is sombody was bored and had a egg shaped holder for silly putty that would give all the shapes of the print and the size is about right.

Shutterbug,

After re-reading the thread I see that my response was indeed uncalled for. I took your sincere attempt at helping me the wrong way.

Perhaps I'm a hole @ss sometimes as well.

Sorry for the harsh misunderstanding.

is that the only print? the circle at the back eliminates all dogs. It really doesn't match anything, and many have seen such single tracks before... then it's Man Made. One toe is missing and the distance between the track is necessary for identification.

Other wise this is close...

Could the "track" be where someone with a hiking stick poked the ground. I'm thinking two hikers meet. One asks how far ahead to water or where the next shelter is, or the best place to get some bacon or whatever, and the other, resting, leans on his/her hiking stick (not a pole, an old fashioned stick). As the conversation progresses, the person leaning on the stick moves it a couple of times and picks it up and puts it down just a bit to the side and after five minutes, you have a mystery track. Just a theory.

No, it wasn't accidental for sure.

I saw it as either a possibly legit partial print, or if not that, someone took their time being crafty.

As an expert tracker, I can tell you definatively that this is the track of Old Slewfoot, a monstous bear who walks upright on his deformed rear feet with the aid of a large hiking staff. Looks like the poor old guy was hungry, too, and heading west at 3:47 PM with a new staff, probably hickory.
Aliens. Sheesh!!

It shaped like the back foot of a small bear, the scat could be coyote or fox. Mice are coyotes main diet.

Possibly too large for Lynx, but I don't see the pad correctly,
