Anyone heard how the first hikers are doing? The weather here in Upstate SC is WARM! The hikers must be lovin the weather but hating the cold weather gear getting a free ride in their packs this week. I know its only the 5th, but I thought I read that quite a few started on the 1st. With the good weather I figure that everything is going great. I wish I was out there.

I met two NOBOs on Tuesday, 1/04/05 between Unicoi Gap and Indian Grave Gap.. Hydro-Heidi and Alpha. Both making good time with the unusually warm January start. They both reported leaving Springer on January 1.

Smokestack and I took advantage of the abnormally warm weather and went backpacking from Dicks Creek Gap (about 5 miles from GA/NC border). Met Hercules and FAL (Free At Last) near Plum Orchard Gap. They started 1/1/05 with Alpha and Hydro.

We noted in the Plum Orchard Shelter regiser that Mountain Man and his 14 year old daughter headed northbound the first week of December. Does that make them early 2005ers or late 2004ers? At any rate.. wish all the best luck and good weather.

There was a NOBO that started Dec. 29th. He would be the the last one for 2004

I saw this NOBO hiking in shorts and short sleeves around Jan. 1 just north of Plumorchard Gap. Forget his name. He must be in the smokies or north of there by now.
