I was at my local Kmart yesterday (Denver) and the hickory farms beef summer sausage was on a really good sale - on amazon it's $10, and at kmart the sticker on the shelf said 5.99 - but when I checked out, it was 4.49!

definitely went back and got more... it seems like a really good food to pair w/ crackers and cheese, or dice up and include as protein in just about any pasta dish.

If you like this stuff, then you should know about HF (http://www.hickoryfarms.com/category~name~Specials~c~450~frc~HFS.asp) huge sale every year a few weeks after New Years. So the Sausage and cheese boxes which usually contain 2-10 oz sausages, and a few different 6 oz blocks of cheese go for as little as $4-6 with $10 flat shipping. When I bought this year, everything was 75% off and their Smoked Turkeys and Hams (shipped in Styrofoam boxes with dry ice) which were normally $79-$99 were only $19 each. I bought one of each and really wish I had gotten a few more. Right now I'm sitting on about 10-12 of their various gift boxes "Beef n'Chedder", "Family & Friends", "Hearty Beef", "Sausage Trio".... all for about $75-$80. We use them for picnics, having friends over or take one when visiting a friend and of course backpacking.
On another forum, a women was talking about buying a pallet load of product from Hickory Farms and using it all year long as lunch. It is a little too much sausage and cheese for me, but still, it is very cheap.

In fact they (http://www.hickoryfarms.com/category~name~Specials~c~450~frc~HFS.asp) still have a huge sale on now for all the different dried fruit and nut combos they have (...$26 marked down to $6).

hi! been lurking here a while. read this thread last night and its been bothering me all night. in regaurds to "things" that "go" with summer sausage,....i respectfully disagree with some of the suggestions here. in fact all of them. heres what i belive "goes with" summer sausage:

a comfortable log to plop down on somewhere on the trail when your booking and only want a pitstop for a slice and a slurp.

the perfect tree to use as a backrest for a long lazy napping munching nap munch.

a hiker buddy to share wacks of snacks while walking and talking.

a middle of the night hungry wake up put back to sleep snack.

a snuck snack sneeked in the no sausage section of a bus to stroudsburg.

Then you have to cut it up to mail it to yourselves. But once the vacuum seal is open, the product can go bad over time, right? Seems to me you'd have to repackage it in vacuum seal.

Now for a group weekend like Scouts, this is a great deal for a lunch.

Why did Hickory Farms discontinue the beef stick?
