I know a lot of thru-hikers start from now into March.....heads up to be prepared for possible severe thunderstorms from GA northward. Here in Maryland, we have a winter storm warning for 5 - 7" of snow overnight tonight.

I'm starting in a few days... Why are there thunder storms and not snow storms???

You think there is going to be anymore snow in the southern Appalachians this year?

Hard telling, not knowing. I guess you'll find out first hand...

I know there are some pretty crazy early spring storms in GA and NC.

You can't predict. Here's two pics from a camping trip in April 2009 on my land near Asheville. The first day was sunny and near 70. The next day, well, you tell me.

Southerners can get all misty-eyed sometime when they think of snow.
It can get old fast. :D

Yes. Everytime I've been to Springer between March and April I've seen snow. I've seen snow through SNP in May. And I nearly got hypothermia in August (freezing rain) in Maine. The mountains have their own weather system.

BTW, I got a minor sunburn today on my bike ride:sun Spring is here in Florida and there's no looking back.

Here in Maryland, we have a winter storm warning for 5 - 7" of snow overnight tonight. We just got walloped with almost 10 inches of snow today. I can't remember who, but someone declared on a thread the other day that winter was over. Talk about wishful thinking:D

Sure it can happen all the way into early April sometimes. You never know. We had snow in Erwin on Easter in April '07. Those in the Smokies got walloped.

I have not seen snow here after March. But it can be cold and you could definitely get sleet, etc. at higher elevations.

It never is up there. I used to live in NY and we have gotten snow in May. But spring has sprung down here. I saw my first forsythia in bloom :)
