My guide book shows that there is camping there. How many places and quality?

Some bigger camping spots opposite the trail to the shelter and a few smaller spots on the way to the shelter.

Not any really prime sites as I can recall . I vaguely remember a campsite near the shelter on a section from a few years back.
I would go with what Blissful said and look opposite the spur trail leading into the shelter.
Manassas Gap Shelter was only a walk in , look around and fill up the Nalgene bottles and head for greener pastures down the trail scenario for me.
