Is there a good place to leave my vehicle in Glencliff NH ? Are there any vandalism issues in Glencliff? I am planning to hike from Hanover to Glencliff after the bug season.

Thanks :sun

Wally, Call the guys at the hostel. I'm sure they can arrange something for you.

There is nothing in Glencliff, it should be fine. Park it at the hostel to be sure. Packrat and Lion King wont mind if you mention it to them.

Walkin Wally -- I've parked in the gravel lot off Route 25 in Glencliff for two different weekend-long trips and didn't have any trouble. However, I'm sure the hostel down the street would be safer bet for a longer trip.

Happy trails,
Ivy

That gravel lot is right at the trailhead, and gets plowed out. I've never had a problem there in Spring and Fall. I don't know how much parking room is at Hiker's Welcome in Winter, but I know the parking just north of the shelter isn't plowed out.

TJ,

By the time bug season arrives, you shouldn't have to worry about getting plowed out, even in the Whites.

Thanks a lot for the info guys and girls. I can't wait to hit the trail.

It would be nice if some of us could get together for a Whiteblaze hike this year!! :)

How ya doin Ivy ?

How ya doin Ivy ?

Great! I'm eagerly waiting for bug season (since I'm a glutton for punishment) to head back to Maine. :)

As I have done before, and will continue to do in the future, I'll share info and photos about parts of The Trail I've done. This post will concentrate on a parking option on High Street (which I mistakenly called High ROAD on several of my photos) just north of Glencliff, but will include photos on what the A.T. looks like as you walk through this area. For those with no interest in directions or informational photos, feel free to skip this.

ANYWAY, let's say you're heading east on NH Highway 25, having left State Highway 10, U.S. Highway 5, and/or I-91. What will you see as look for a place to park?

Contrary to what one famous online map service would indicate, you will NOT first see the post office. Nor will you find the A.T. trail head at a bridge over Oliverian Brook. You MIGHT see a small marker on the north (ie, left as you head east) side of the road. More likely you'll see a large, gravel pull-off area on the south (right) side.

with an A.T. Sign and a gravel road heading south. This is the actual trail head, with a permitted (although unofficial) parking area.
If you're heading south, just go on the gravel road

If you're heading north towards Jeffers Brook Shelter or Mount Moosilauke, park in this lot, look for a marker & a small cairn just west of the lot,
http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=61101
and then follow the trail towards Oliverian Brook (which you'll hear). Just be aware that you might have to walk on paved roads to continue north.

Here's an idea of what I experienced while fording here last week:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sim3lZG9xb8
I myself had absolutely no trouble, but I always carry sandals AND I know the basics of fording streams.

It is only after you continue east on Highway 25 that you reach the Post Office on the south (right) side, and Hikers Welcome Hostel
http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=61102
on the north (left) side.

If you continue even further east on NH Highway 25, you'll see signs for the Glencliff Home
http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=61114
which is at the top of High Street
http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=61113
Note that another famous online map service shows this road as "Sanitorium Road."
On this street, just below the home, is (1) the trail head for reaching Mount Moosilauke and (2) a free, designated parking area.

As you drive up High Street, you'll see a sign with a famous bear on your left.
http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=61106
This is Forest Service Road #19, called Long Pond Road on some maps but not on any signs. More on this later.
Soon after that, you'll see a well-maintained lawn on the left, as well as a sign indicating the A.T. goes down the street at this point.
http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=61112
This is the actual trail head for going north, and the parking area (and the home) are just up the road from here.
The parking lot is on the right

http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=61110
http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=61109

At this lot is a map
http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=61108
with an overview of the area that is a bit misleading. It shows the A.T. as leaving the road and going right to this lot; when actually The Trail goes along the road just below this parking area.

Let's say you've parked here. If you want to head north towards Mount Moosilauke, walk down the road just a bit till you get to the actual trail head
http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=61107
If you want to head south towards Jeffers Brook Shelter, continue down High Street till you return to the famous bear,
http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=61106
then walk along this road towards the gate. Go over the gate, cross the bridge, then veer to the left as the A.T. leaves the road.
http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=61105
You'll be at Jeffers Brook before you know it.

The walk from the parking area to the shelter took me about fifteen minutes, and could be followed in minimal visibility. As such, it could be a good starting point if you arrive in this area at dark.
