What's the size of your tarp? (If you have more than one, which size works best?)

For what use?
Ground camping. Not hammock tarps.

I don't have an 8'x10'sil nylon, but that is what I would get for that sort of thing. I have a smaller poncho/tarp that I could use, but it doesn't have the space I would like to have when using it as a shelter on a regular basis.

I have an 8 X 5, but I got it because my tent was so heavy and that's the cheapest thing I found where I was during my hike. It was a fine backup even when it rained, but I don't recommend it because I had absolutely no space whatsoever under there.

For hammock camping when I am not expecting rain every day - 5 x 10 foot silnylon tarp.

8 X 10 for either hammock or ground camping - I use a tarp on ground camping. Usually, I use my Nomad on the ground. I just haven't gotten that comfortable without a floor.

I used an 8x10 when I use to tarp solo and it seemed about the right size to me. It was a little on the narrow side when I used it with a girl friend... for two folks I think I would want a 10x10.

Mine was (it's retired in favor of a Nomad tent) 9' X 9' & served me well for 3 years of sectioning & other hikes. I am thinking of going back to using a tarp, WAY more room & versitility than a tent. But then again, I do love my Nomad. Decisions decisions.

If I go back to a tarp, I'll go with a sil nylon one, probably the same size or at least similar.

I have used: 10 x 8, 10 x 10, 12 x 12 (Way huge :D ) & all worked well. The 12 x 12 covered enough area as a "Flying wedge" to comfortably sleep 3.

Is it the size of your tarp or how you use it? :D

I've not camped with but have played with a 5'x10'. For some reason the Holden tent fascinates me.

I do the 10 x 10 mondo tarp condo.

Me likes the freedom and room in pouring rain.
I also put my tent up under it and in the morning all my stuff...including tent is dry. load pack....take down tarp and shake, stuff tarp into side pack pocket and Viola....walken de' down trail.

I used to use a smaller tarp and got tired of nights in rain...the bigger tarp only weighs a few more ounces and gives me plenty of dry space.

Hmm, do many of you do like Spiritwind and use the tarp as extra protection ABOVE your tent (if you tent, that is)?

I thought I had read before that many don't bother with a tarp and it wasn't worth the weight, but maybe that was for UNDER your tents, and just recommending to be careful where you pitch it...

Last year our tent totally LEAKED on our 6th day of our section hike and pulled us off the trail almost 2 days early because every single thing we had was SOAKED.

This year we got an MSR Missing Link but I am gunshy now after last year. We only get away from all of the kids for a 10 day period TOTAL which includes drive time down south etc - we really REALLY don't want any problems, but not sure if a top tarp is overkill??? Any thoughts?

"ME & "U" used a 10x12 silnylon with our hammocks tied off three trees, heads together, and close enough for me to sing me a lulaby and rock her to sleep. The tarp was this whacked out shape and totaly covered us enough. We voted for 8x10 as I got sick of the extra wt. and now we set up a base camp off an "L" shape. Pretty cool with the corners propped and facing east... just can't get next to my honey!:banana
