Hi everyone, David here. I wanted WB to meet my beloved dog Cuervo. He is german shepard, husky and wolf mix. I hope that other members would like to share pics of their hiking buddies too. I take my dog on almost every hike I go on. He loves porcupines(five total so far), but otherwise stays right behind me while hiking. A very well mannered trail dog and I wouldn't trade him for the world. Thank you for looking and please share your photos!

beautiful pup DELANOIE! =) i have a catahoula mix and a little black lab (respectively, Ziggy and Molly). Molly is my camping companion and she is the only one I have a picture of on my computer right now. This is an okay shot of her on break at Payne gap on the BMT. Me and her have grown quite close from spending so much time together in the woods. She's my girl =) I will post pictures of my boy, Ziggy as soon as I get around to getting some of his pictures from my sister (the resident photographer).

Hello Sidekick!
Growing up we had one of those dogs. His name was buddy and he had a hard life. Once he ate eight pounds of chocolate I was selling for school fundraiser. My parents were so mad because they had to buy it all! He was also hit by three cars in his lifetime. And he had to have surgery after swallowing a chicken bone. Man I miss that dog. It was the last car that hit him that did him in, poor guy.

I don't know how to share my picture of Tessa in an easy way other than to direct you to my personal blog. Check in and scroll down just a bit and you'll see us both. She and I are about to embark on the journey of a lifetime (at least in my little world; some of you have or will have had many adventures, you lucky dogs!) in honor of my beloved grandson Aiden Lopez. Check us out here, and follow us, if you are so inclined.

the vet clinic i used to work at in college had its own agility course and when i'd take her to work with me, i'd stay after and work with her on it. :) she loved it... see-saws and jumping through hoops and whatnot. she'll do anything for treats. ;D i bet flyball is awesome on the trail!

This is Indy, my herding-mix (GSD/BC)... plus a lil' Tennesee Walking Horse, haha. We spent last summer doing day hikes in the Berkshires/Whites, and we're going to work some overnights into our schedule in August. She's very drive-y, so I'm going to have to exhaust her if I want her to sleep when there are ohsomanythings! outside our tent.

My dog Molly is not a hiker though in her younger years she would have loved to hunt. We rescued her when she was 4 and her hunting instincts had never been honed so she is a killer instead. One raccoon, 3 rabbits, several birds, moles and voles.
This picture was taken 6 years ago at her day job (retail sales).
She is now 13 and having hip and respiratory problems. She is not suffering, but I fear that when I leave to hike the trail this year it will kill her. This may sound terrible, but while I love her more than anything I am hoping that she will "go" on her own before I leave in June.

My 11yr old Australian Shepherd, Spry. I got him at 8 weeks with every intention of training him to be the next World Class Agility Super Star. Reality set in, however, when, on his first car trip ever, he spent the entire ride(over 2 hours from the breeder). For the next 10 years, car trips were limited to vet trips. Although, in true brilliant dog fashion, he quickly learned what the plastic bag was for and would put his head in the bag when he needed to throw up.

In Jan, I decided to take him hiking with me, as I was just getting started and his presence made me more comfortable. Not only did he not throw up-He so looks forward to "hiking!", he runs to the car and tries to get in. Longest car ride to date is over 2 hours-and he was super happy the whole time. I think he loves this more than I do!

He will be joining me in May to hike GA, I can only imagine how hard it will be to get him out of the car after that!

Picture are from Desoto State Park, Walls of Jericho, and Bucks Pocket State Park.

And since I know several of the pictures are of him unleashed, he -always- hikes with a leash (more like pulls me along). The leash only comes off while I'm taking a break and am sure no strangers are around. He's a very cautious dog- as long as I've had him, I can't think of a time he's ran up to someone. He always runs back to me (mooooooooooooooooommmmy!!!) Although, someone did pop out of a random off shoot at Walls of Jericho and all I heard was "HOLY ****. A WOLF! DUDE! ITS A WOLF!" Because all wolves like to rock bright blue harnesses. Yah dude. Totally.

All the girls have their own packs when we hit the trail, and Radar is just along for the exhausting exercise so that we can sleep at night.

i just bury my dog's poop. wild animals poop IN the water all the time. if he poops ON the trail, flick it off and bury it. if he poops off the trail, just grab a good stick, dig a hole, and cover it up. :)

also since my dog is a husky shold i shave him ?and how do you guys stop the ticks ? I saved him from a bad crack house dude sold dog for 10 bucks to me ...so far elvis has gained 9 pounds and vet says hes looking good , umm im put tick drops on him but yesterday i got 17 ticks off im worried about the heat too .. so yea should i shave the dog ? and im am sorry about my spelling and grammer

Gaiter
05-25-2011, 16:56
depends on his coat, most dog's coats are actually designed to keep them cool in the summer (thats why they 'blow' their undercoat), and shaving can actually make them hotter...

be sure to use a flea and tick treatment, i'm partial to the topical treatments,
this compares several (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?aid=325) i was recommended by my vet to use it every 3 weeks instead of once a month, my dog is very sensitive to flea bites but this also good if a dog is exposed alot to fleas and ticks... the risk with the flea and tick treatment, is that ticks are more likely to craw over to you instead of hanging out on your dog, so check yourself more often...

here is my coco on a recent hike, on the second one, she normally doesn't like to even get her paws wet, but it was a warm day, so i guess it was bound to happen, thankfully she was dry by night...

When I origionally started this thread, it was to introduce Cuervo. Sadly, shortly after he suffered from a stroke and passed away. Very unexpected and heart breaking.

I needed to fill the void in my heart and then I found Baxter at the animal shelter. I have taken him up Old Speck twice and Old blue Mnt. shown in the photos here. He is a trail dog at heart at only one years old and he suits me well.

By the way he is named after Baxter peak, if you didnt already guess. Ironically he will never see the summit of Katahdin as dogs are not alowed in the park. Only from a distance on other peaks will he catch a glimpse of the mnt. to which he is named.

I love to see dogs getting to go out and enjoy the outdoors. The dogs that stay home all the time and get fat and unhealthy are a real shame.

We actually are also motorcyclists who go out to the backcountry...you guessed it the dogs come too. We have special protective carriers for them. This summer going up to Labrador and NF via the Translab Hwy

Everyone, meet Drake. He is a Catahoula/Border Collie mix. He loves chewing on expensive heels, drinking from my coffee mug when he thinks I'm not looking, long walks on the beach, catching fish from streams, eating sticks, and most of all Michigan football.

We take him on day hikes for the most part, and are beginning to train him for overnight hikes. We plan on section hiking the AT and bringing him with us.

Can't you tell he's ready for football season with his new jersey on? lol

As for the trails, he's only just turning 6 months old so he needs some work, but he is eager to learn. You can't even say words that begin with "Wa" or "Hi" or he’s at the door waiting. Overall I think he will do great! We are taking him on a 3 day, 2 night hiking trip in the hills of Ohio next month! Can’t wait!

Here's my co-pilot, Duchess. She's come a long, long way from the scared-of-her-own-shadow, malnourished wraith I just happened across in a kill shelter in Miami about a year and a half ago. She was scheduled to be euthanized that day. She was so terrified that she wouldn't walk on her own; I had to carry her to my car. It took her several months to even make eye contact with me. She showed aggression with incredible unpredictability. There were a few times when I almost gave up hope and seriously considered bringing her to a rescue, but I would think of the dog that she *could* be, and I cried and felt remorse and just stubbornly held on, despite her repeated running away (she's a slick problem-solver from her time on the streets of Miami), her complete lack of affection or loyalty, and her outbursts of aggression. She simply did not know how to be in a family; all she knew were her feral, completely-canine attributes. It was like trying to tame a wolf.

One day, on a whim, before she was even properly leash-trained, I took her with me on one of my morning hikes. It was like a switch went off in her head -- she showed confidence and curiosity instead of suspicion and doubt. She smelled every blade of grass and literally followed the overgrown trail, never straying from the path. I was overjoyed by this massive leap in progress. I tripled my efforts with her since then, and my god have they paid off.

We are still working on it, but I now have almost 100% command of her via both hand and voice commands, on and off leash. Our current training involves her responding to hand or voice commands in front of distractions (cats, groups of dogs, pedestrians, in public places, etc). I'm so proud of her -- and I'm so glad I never gave in when things looked grim.

Despite this progress, I will not be taking her along with me on my thru next year. I truly believe she is not ready for that kind of experience. I will continue taking her out on the trails though, as we are both at our best in the woods. :)

OK, fastforward to today...Unfortunately, Baxter got a taste for my chickens and killed nine out of fifteen of my laying hens and two of my meat birds. We also have sheep for neighbors and he has harrassed them as well. He chewed through five screen windows while we were not home and ran away several times. So, we decided to return him to the animal shelter. I hated to do it, but he just wasnt a good fit for living on a farm. He will be missed because he is a georgeous dog and well mannered on the trail.

Meet the newest member of our family. This is Bruno. He is a Bermise Mountain dog(sp). He is still too little for hiking but he is super cute. He is well tempered and does good on the leash taking walks on the road.

Thanks Dlanoie. They are great. The packs only took a short afternoon for them to get used to. The packs each have two 1 liter water bladders on each side which is great, and they can carry quite a bit of gear but we are not looking for them to be our pack mules. :) They carry their own, kit, we carry our own kit. With their leashes, food, their own first aid kit, etc, the total weight is approx 12-15 pounds. We are "bounce boxing" the food so the weight goes down 1.66 pounds a day (not that Im being anal), with a refill every 3-5 days. We have been training up here in the Adirondack Park in the snow so I think they will be all set when we start at Springer on 19 March.

Bump... alright, let me try my luck with the photo uploader...

This is Stella my five year old German Wirehaired Pointer. She's a wonderful trail dog on my local haunts and if we go a day without letting her get a good run she acts like she's been locked up for months..

She's in her glory when she's off leash running circles around me which is why familiar trails are a must, she spends a good bit of her life running behind my girlfriend and her horse. When she's on the A.T. her nose and hunting drive require that she's on leash, usually harnessed and clipped into my waistbelt with a carabiner (I'd never risk clipping her to me from a collar, I worry it would hurt her if I took a fall and dragged her with me). That said, she's well trained and is glad to stay in a down command and wait for me to call her while I traverse steep or unsafe terrain. Her trail manners are excellent and she's won over a number of skeptical hikers and trail maintainers.
Now that she's getting old enough to slow down from that young dog energy, I'm hoping to get her into more slow and steady multi-day hikes, but it's her decision how that will go. :sun

Going to miss him severely on the 3rd when I arrive at b.s.p. and he isn't with me for the next 6 months. I grew up on a farm with tons of dogs and this one is the only one to earn my last name.

Not to be a thread killer here, but it was sad to hear recently a young sobo who just started a week or so ago had his hike ended when he went to use the restroom the other night , got out of his tent & was bit by another hikers unleased dog. Please if you hike with your dog, keep it on a lease & camp away from those who do not like dogs. ~Peace~

I did not realize that there are hikers (that hike) who do not like dogs! I usually do not camp around others, but if someone should venture near my camp I will poll as to them "not liking" dogs.

True that wornoutboots. I keep my dog leashed during the day and in the tent at night. Looks like JT (trail journal) had an ankle issue and that is what actually side tracked him, at least until July. Still, very bad on the dog owner, even at dawn. But the young man who was biten was a much better sport about the bite than I would have been.

Here is a shot of Fortis (pack on). I said goodbye to him in January of 2011 before starting my hike. He was a 150lb Cane Corso and my loyal friend for 11 years. The second picture is of Willow. She is my new pup and will hopefully (if her training continues to progress as it has been) be hiking with me during my 2013 thru hike attempt. She is a Plott Hound Terrier Mix....I think :)

This is my boy Berkley. He is a giant schnauzer that loves hiking and other hikers unless they approach suddenly from around the trail. Found this out while climbing in the red river gorge. He was on a leash and there was never any danger, but he is a large dog and quite intimidating. I felt really bad for the climbers who showed up and apologized. They startled him and he calmed down after a few minutes had passed. 16400

I would bet he would make a stab at it and then we'd be down a week getting his gut back in shape; after some fatty chickin broth last Sunday, I think we will be limiting his fat (and human food) intake. It wass alomost like his gut got coated and was not working correctly.

This is my little hiking buddy, Freddie Fox, with his dad on top of Wesser firetower in NC. Don't let his size fool you. Freddie is a very athletic little guy and loves to go day hiking more than anything else in the world. We keep the round trip mileage to 5 miles or less because he is a little guy, but he has summited Blood Mt. in Georgia several times, Wesser and Albert Mountain firetowers, and numerous short hikes in north Georgia & the Nantahala National Forest. He always gets very excited when the leash, boots and walking sticks come out. He's polite to other dogs, hikers, and is an all around good trail doggie.
