Planning to start north bound from Springer Mountain March 31 so I am keeping an eye one the weather. Figure others might be curious as well. I am looking mostly at the stretch between Springer and Mt Rogers, the strectch I hope to cover before May.

2 March (Texas Independance Day) Lows between 39 (Helen, GA) and 29 (Mt. Rogers, VA). Highs between 67 (Helen, GA) and 45 (Mt. Rogers). Springer to about mile 70 sunny beyond that to Mt. Rogers looks rainy.

Any reason why you are starting "south from Springer" instead of north? Just askin'! :-?

Good luck on your hike!

I've been using the monthly forecast for Hiawassee, planing for 10 degrees less than the record low as a temp point to plan my gear & clothing.
http://www.weather.com/weather/monthly/USGA0270?month=1

I'm leaving Springer or AFSP the same day, hiking to Winding Stair Gap.

That's some good stuff. Bookmarked it. I looked at that reporting station and it is listed at 2,950 elevation so the 10 degree might be overkill. Hope so because I had planned for the record lows listed.

The only mountain I could find on the early part of the AT was Springer. Any others?

They're all on there - Sassaffras, Blood, Tray, all the way up, then you can search by other ranges. You almost need a map, or have the peak names committed to memory to know them all.

6 March - Springer to Mt Rogers Low 23 high 55 Rainy! On this day in 1836 the Alamo fell after a thirteen day siege by Mexican forces. The battle was over before daylight.

It started snowing here at my home in Asheville @ 11:00 a.m. (3/6), the local radar shows some fairly heavy snow from the Smokies to SW TN.

As of this morning there is about 12 inches of snow on the ground in the smokies in the higher elevations. If all of the precipitation they have had in the last 3 days was snow there would be from 4 to 5 feet on the ground in the higher elevations.

It's Spring here in Jax, Florida. This time last year it was not -- very long winter last year. However, it has been a very cool spring so far, use to be I was sweating bullets during my bike rides this time of year.

BTW, I know it's not officially spring, I'm just talking about weather wise no more cold and all plant, animal and insect life is doing all the spring time activities.

Felt like spring (or a cool summer day) here in the Whites yesterday. Sunny and 50 degrees - warm enough to walk around out side without a coat! Our impressive snow banks are starting to shrink. Even so, it will still be a week or two before bare ground starts to poke through and quite a bit longer before the summits are clear of snow.

In 2003, the Navy spent $6 million to develop the best, up-to-date, weather forecasting model. They discovered the best way to forecast is look out the window today, 50% chance it will be the same tomorrow.

I never listen to the weather channel when they predict rain, almost never happens. The only way I know rain is coming is by looking at the long-range radar picture; if there's a large mass of green blowing this way then I know it's going to rain. But when the computer predicts rain it almost never happens....just show me the radar picture, forget them computer-generated predictions.

29 March - Springer to Mt Rogers Low 35 high 66 Rainy!. Takin' off to East Texas where I will join up with my two hikin' buddies. We will hit the approach trail on Friday the 1st and and maybe do a few miles of the AT to get away from the shelters. First real day will be Saturday. Weather is lookin' nice by the forecast for the first few days, lows around 40 highs in the 60s with little chance of rain. Here we go!
