I will be mailing drops for a friend who will be thru-hiking this year, and I would like suggestions for some unique items that could brighten his day. Last year I sent a cupcake with a couple of balloons and a birthday candle to coincide with his birthday. Homemade cookies were also a big hit.

It would be nice to send little things that are lightweight or he could share with others.

My son (8yrs old) suggested the new ring pops that have a red light that flashes, and the thing looks like a babys pacifier which makes it even funnier.

Anything is great. From ring pops to brownies to themed boxes around holidays (marshmellow bunnies at easter). It is sometimes fun waiting to see what a hiker will have in there drops whenthey are known for the odd and extra food.

Photos/letters/cards from home. I really treasured the encouragement friends and family sent me and often carried the letters & pics with me; it's not like they weigh a lot and they were wonderful to reread at night after a long day of hiking.

My mom sent me a few necessary items after I was a theft victim in Damascus (avoid Chad Wayne Terry of Abingdon, VA!). She also couldn't resist sending some food from the local chinese market. One item was "Pork-Fu", which was stringy dried pork. It was super light weight and dry and fully, and it had the texture, appearance, and consistency of shag carpeting. You could surprise your friend with some of that.

I wouldn't send anything large that they cannot eat or give away quickly. For example, don't send them a copy of War and Peace, even if it is a great read. Some things that would be nice:

1) Food (fudge is great, odd ethnic snacks like dried chili mango, chocolate covered expresso beans).

2) A phone card.

3) Pre-stamped, pre-addressed postcards.

4) Several airplane bottles of liquor.

5) Porn.
