Hi i got a friend who gone to pick up his thur-hke at marion va on may 1 he wonder if he will need his rain pants. I told him to leave them at home. What do you guys think

In May, including NY-ME, I packed a pair of shorts and my ULA rain skirt and did just fine.

It may rain in May. In fact, when I did VA in May of '09, it rained pretty much everyday. YWMV. (your weather may varry). To use rain pants or not depends on ones preferences. Personally, I don't bother with them, but I do like knee high gaiters instead.
I started in February and pretty much never used rain pants; I can't imagine bringing them in May for any part of the AT. Seems to me that at some point the rain is relatively warm, and for me personally, at least, I'd be wet with the rain pants anyway due to sweat.
Rain skirt might not be a bad thing to have. Or just get wet and dry out again when the rain stops.
Some sort of low gaiter can be nice in the rain just to keep lower pant legs cleaner (I sleep in my clothes).

No need. I might get them back before the Whites though
The only time I wore my rain pants was at the laundromat.
