I know it's a bit of a distance from the trail, but I will provide pick up from the Max Patch lot and bring hikers to Asheville for hot food, a place to stay, and gear/supply runs.

That he's even willing to do it is awesome. Why complain about it.

Exactly.....who would tell someone who is willing to do something out of the goodness of their heart that it should be done a different way?.... That took gall...

Yea it's better to drive 1.5 hrs. from Asheville to get to Max Patch, on some beat the car to death road vs. 30 minutes of Interstate to Sam's which is out in the middle of nothing where a hiker would really love some trail majic.

Sounds awesome!

Speaking of the road up to Max Patch, does anyone know how that compares to FS42 in GA?

It depends on which end of FS42 you are talking about. from Big Creek Rd to Springer it is about the same. If you are comparing from Springer to Hightower or Horse Gap, the Max Patch road is MUCH better.

It also depends on which route you take to get to Max patch. The road from I-40 (Harmon Den exit 7) is not that bad, for a gravel road.
