Even considering that many people don't bother to report their hike, does anyone else wonder why there were so few reported completions of Sobo hikes in 2010, relative to the previous several years?

The ATC stats are as of Dec 14. I bet the next time they update the stats the completion stats will be comparable.

What kind of numbers are you talking about? Can you be more specific?

Maybe the southbounders are a more honest crowed? If they did not hike the entire AT then there is no reason to report that they did.

The ATC is reporting that about 5% of 2010 SOBOs completed their hike. The "normal" reported completion rate is around 25%.

However, the stats are as of 12/14/10. I expect to see a normal completion rate when the ATC updates their numbers.

On the other hand, another thread on WB would have us believe that SOBOs do not get as many blazes to follow as NOBOs. So maybe most of last years SOBOs are still wandering around lost in the woods.

I was a SOBO in '10! I finished December 21st after some nasty snow in the Smokies. I hiked with my boyfriend and know of a few other people who finished or may have gotten their report in after December 14th. And since I finished so late, I'd say a possible reason there were so few is the early cold spell in the south. Though I guess most SOBOs finish around Thanksgiving? I don't really know.
