well im new to this forum but i cant seem to find a trail that goes around or goes by a lake. ive checked out fontana but im bringing some of my friends and one in particular has never been backpacking. the stretch from wesser to fontana dam is pretty brutal so i dont want him to be miserable. hes an avid fisherman so we would like to be by a lake so he can fish and i can get my hiking in. oh yah and i can go anywhere around the southeast since i like in atlanta

The AT goes around the west side of Wautauga Lake in TN about 30 miles south of Damascus, VA., and there's a shelter there, too.
Wautauga Lake Shelter.

You can camp right on Watauga too. One site I saw even had its own fishing cleaning table.

plenty of lakes along the AT in Maine if you are up that way
nothing worse than setting up camp near a fishing lake and hearing boats running all night
