Should I buy pants that are slightly tight in the waist now, figuring that along the way I'll lose weight and thus those pants will then become not so tight?

Thanks.

I'd recommend starting out wearing what fits and is comfortable at the time you start. You can then adjust as conditions dictate.

Be comfortable. Hiking is tough enough

No. Go with comfort to start. You can buy new pants along the trail very easily.

Wear a belt if they become too loose.

You won't want to do a thru hike in one pair anyway - buy what fits - I like Mountain Hardware Canyon Shorts - they have a cinch that makes them tighter without bunching up - lots of folks just wear nylon athletic shorts with a self adjusting elastic waist - this works too.

I'm surprised it took this long for aomeone to mention elastic. Elastic is one word answer to this post.

I want to say one word to you. Just one word.

Elastics.

Better than a belt: BUNGEE CORD!!!
Or hook a carabiner between two belt loops.

Go with an old pair of Umbro's. Good enough for 80's futbol stars good enough for penguins.

Be comfy- you can always get a belt or some thick string to hold them up, and a little too loose is better than a little too tight. Besides, you can't predict how much weight you'll lose and where you will gain muscle.

Sure, wear slightly tighter pants. They can get very expensive, especially if you're using Railriders pants. Yeah, they look funny at first. Not a big deal unless you're trying to win the AT fashion show.
