Hey guys, I've been doing a lot of research for some simple nylon cargo hiking shorts. Nothing too elaborate, the main thing I want is a shorter inseam (6-8 inches) and side pockets for hands. Cargo pockets are not required and I could do without.

I've looked at ExOfficio, Columbia and The North Face but almost everything I've seen has a 10" inseam! Any recommendations?

I bought cheap plain ones at Sam's club and hemmed them up an inch or two on my own. Only way to get real "shorts" these days. Other wise, they're actually "longs" and not shorts at all.

Found some short shorts last season at Cabella's on line. Bass Pro had similar cut shorts too.

Yeah, what's up with the long shorts that are for sale these days? I have to hem my running shorts. If I wanted something down around my ankles, I would buy pants. Even Patagonia Baggies are longer now. Manufacturers are catering to someone when they make these "longs". I just don't know who. I would love to hear from someone who does know.

Seems these days so many shorts are of the long basketball type length. I like short shorts too! Go Lite makes some nice short inseam nylon hiking shorts. IMO, the cargo style shorts have WAY TOO MANY pockets, strings, zips, etc and long of an inseam for lengthy thru-hikes.

I like shorter than a 5" inseam - problem is they are very hard to find. Cabellas (http://www.cabelas.com/mens-casual-shorts-cabelas-trail-shorts-150-5-inseam-1.shtml) has some 5", but they are cotton. So I typically just wear runner's shorts with 2" (http://www.amazon.com/Eastbay-Split-2-Color-Running-Short/dp/B003ZW9DQC/ref=pd_sim_dbs_sg_2) or 3" (http://www.amazon.com/Nike-Anthracite-Inseam-Dri-FIT-Running/dp/B002F1IHXO) inseam.

And you mean to tell me that they comprise enough of the market to virtually eliminate the functional types of outdoor wear? That's interesting.

Lt. Jim Dangle may have some suggestions SIR. But you may want to add an inch or two to his suggested shorts. If you are asking deputy Jones you may want to subtract a number of inches.

Odd, I want longer shorts. That way with tall gaters, i don't have to rezip the pants legs on or put on rain pants when going through brush or fields.

I also have a tall inseam.

I wear running shorts which I order from roadrunnersports.com. They have shorts as short or as long as you want.

Having said that my Patagonia hiking shorts lasted my entire thru. I don't think that my running shorts would last that long.

Short inseams on a guy's hiking shorts are just unseamly! Your purpose might be better served with a simple rainbow on your pack. No need to troll. Besides, you ever hear the old campfire tune "Got a skeeter on my *eter, get it off, got a tick on my *ick, get it off..." and so on?

Yeah if patagucci's baggies were shorter they would be perfect, I heard they used to be but what the heck happened?
