Trying to get my pack weight down from 33 lbs for a 4 day trip from Cosby to Hot Springs May 1. My last shakedown hike was 2.5 days and I brought a bag of gorp for snacking and after meals that weighed one pound. If I doubled that for my 4 day trip the weight just seems too much. I had the wal mart carribean mix. Have a big appetite usually.

Go you carry gorp? How much? Aren't I better off dumping the gorp, maybe altogether, and trading it for protein bars?

Sometimes I carry gorp, many times I don't. Have to be in the mood for it. Almost always carry salt and pepper cashews and m&ms, but keep them segragated. There are so many possibilities for snacks other than gorp, just experiment. Bringing Rice Crispy treats on next weeks hike. :)

Go to Thru-hiking Info, scroll down to Prep Articles, then to Nutrition Chart. You can compare the food value of almost anything you could carry. I love gorp, but it is heavy.
