This is a video link to RW's 2011 pick of trail runner shoes. Keep in mind you have to first suffer through a 30 second ad.

On a personal note and on a slightly different topic, I used the Adidas SuperNovas for the first couple hundred miles that I hiked on the AT. While I liked them ok for trail running, I've never felt good wearing trail runners while hiking. My pack weight is about 27 lbs which includes 4 days food and 2 liters water, so maybe I'm too big (210 lbs) or carry too much weight for trail runners to be optimal. I now hike in North Face boots and my feet feel better.

For off-road running, I"m currently using Brooks, mostly because they're one of the few brands that offer narrow widths.

Remember that since RW relies heavily on adverts from shoe companies that they could have a conflict of interest regarding "reviews".

Backpacking, and most similar heavy-advert magazines have the same problem. In some cases such magazines only list "reviews" for companies that have paid to have one published! Yes it can be a racket--not at all what it claims to be. That's why organizations like Consumer Reports and many others don't accept advertising.

Once you accept adverts you loose all credibility.

Sure, read the reviews, but also read reviews from non-commercial sources, blogs, forums, etc.

North Face got one of their shoes on that list. That speaks volumes as to their credibility, or rather, their lack thereof.

New Balance 876s for me. Don't need a magazine to tell me which shoe is best for me.

EXACTLY. 88BLUEGT has a thread about NF boots falling apart in like 250 miles or so.

for backpacking I LOVE my newbalance 574's. for running I use the Saucony ezcursion tr5's. both come in 2E widths which is nice. the thing with shoes is that they FIT PROPERLY. one mans perfect shoe can be another mans meat grinder (even if you wear the same size shoe).
