I did my thru in 2010, and even in March, there was a ton of snow on the ground. Does it often snow in the winter, in the southern sections, I heard that was just a really bad winter. What are the temps, usually? As long as it only gets a little below zero in the winter, that would be ok.

It is of my opinion that these things go in cycles.
Perhaps 5 year cycles.
So, what it was this year, is aprox. what it will be next year.

When I did my SOBO through hike in 2001/2002, it was a mild winter, as was the one before it.
Now, I would've had a much tougher and snow filled hike.

This was probably one of the worst ones in a while.
Next year is very liable to be the same.

Just my 2 cents.

Also the Great Smokie Mtns can receive a lot:http://www.greatsmokyway.com/snow-storm-slams-smokies
