I saw a modified setup once long ago where a guy had modified an oversized mummy bag with a reinforced hole top and bottom to slide over the entire hammock serving as both a upper and lower quilt in one (more or less a cacoon). Now that I am making the plunge from sleeping on the ground I have interest in this.

Any thoughts on this?

If you do this, please post pictures of the rig. I attempted a search with little luck.

I know this is my first post but I am a long time lurker of the site and absolutely love it.

If you have the money .. $369 .. you could get a Speer PeaPod (http://www.speerhammocks.com/Products/PeaPod.htm).

If you can find a large sized bag with a zippered foot vent, you can do what you want with little or no modification. Just hang the hammock "through" the bag get in the hammock and pull the bag up. It will depend on what kind of hammock you have though; I do not think this would work with a Clark or Hennessey, with out some modification.

Check out www.hammockforums.com (http://www.hammockforums.com) (Whiteblaze sister site) for tons of info on hammocks in general.

A couple problems have been the limited availability of large bags with zippered foot vents .. and the weight of any 20° bags large enough to envelop a hammock have been much more than the 2# 6oz of the PeaPod.

I had never seen the pea pod before, definitely looks like a stellar product. Can anyone think of any pros/cons to this over quilts?

Looks to me like it might be a little overkill for a typical thru-hike though.

The only reason I thought of the sleeping bag was that I have an older one that might be big enough to do the trick. A small grommet through the foot and a little chop to the head section might bring a old piece of gear I wouldnt use ever again back to life.

If this is a piece of kit that you do not use anyways, then experimenting with it before going with something a bit pricier may be a good idea.

I would suspect that it would take a bit more then a grommet sized hole in the foot. However if you have, or know someone who has sewing skills/a sewing machine cutting a slit in the toebox and adding some velcro or a decent YKK zipper would be a piece of cake.

What kind of Hammock do you have?

I don’t have one as of yet, just getting into this sort of thing.

My friends have eno double nests for lounging around campus, and hanging out. Neither of them has ever over-nighted in them (except for a drunken night in Panama City spring break lol). I like the style so I may look into something along that line.

Many other brands have caught my eye since I started looking in here a few weeks ago, I am not sure what I will end up with. Is there any model that you believe will be most conducive to what I am trying to do?
