I've got 5 days at the end of May.

Should I just start at Springer and start my way up or start around Fontana Dam and hike around in there?

I've done some Tenn/NW N.C. but none of Georgia or NC line.

Suggestions on which is better, easier (in terms of shuttles, getting to and from etc) what's different?

Something completely different?

Thoughts? Prayers?

come to Damascus and i'll shuttle you north around 70 miles and you hike south back to damascus thru one of the best AT sections

Now you can't beat that. Take him up on it. But you will have your share of thru hikers then, so plan to tent

Can I quote you on that? Sounds good. All that's needed is to convince my buddy this is the best idea. He's hiked Mt Rogers (and surrounding areas) I have not.

So what you're saying is skip Springer? Really the only appeal is that it's the start (or end) of the trail.

He's in England right now hiking Hadrians Wall. I will offer up Damascus when he gets back and shoot you a message.
