Where is the best parking area in the Mt Greylock Summit area for this April. Looking for multi-day safe space within 5 miles north or south on the AT of the summit. Or if the summit parking is safe - let me know that too.

Thanks

When I section hiked this area in 2009 I left my car in the lot at a local club about two blocks east of the trail. I forgot the name of it now. You have to go to the bar within the club and sign a register. You basically park in their lot very close to the road so your car is safe. I left my car there during June and July, 2009 and had no problems. The car started right up when I got back to it.

I forgot to mention that this was in North Adams, MA where the trail crosses MA2.

I always refer to the rohland site- it is a great resource. But it seems like it refers to most of the parking around the summit area as day lots.

I don't think summit area is open in April. They usu open late May. Even if they wanted to open in April, it's still snowed in - certainly this year for at least a few more weeks. Check out State of Mass site: http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/mtGreylock/

Mt Greylock Community Club is the place mentioned by mikec and others. They request a small donation for parking. The lot is lighted and visible from the highway. It's located on Rt 2 about 200yd east of the AT.

The road to Mt Greylock summit is closed until typically the 3rd week in May. It may close temporarily after that if conditions warrant it. Until is it open, there are no hiker services (water) at the summit.

Snow pack reports of a "couple of feet" on the summit from last week. They are still skiing the top half of the Thunderbolt trail. http://www.thunderboltskirunners.org/
