"2014" after the wife finishes her degree, I know it's gonna be cold but I want to starte on my b-day in feb. Got almost the entire New England section done and most of that is in the winter and dam it gets cold and real challenging that time of the year. Hope to see you all out there.

I am likely to have a free slot from jan-mid aug 2014, I have sectioned most of the trail in winter and figure on starting at the beginning of the year, usually 2-5 will try that each year and until late feb only a few per week will attempt a start so a little more company is likely with the start on the 1st

Hi all,

when hitting the midlife crisis some buys a Porsche, some gets a 21 year old girlfriend.....I plan to walk 2000+ miles on another continent in 2014 starting mid-march.

Does anybody have any good ideas what to do when you have absolutely no chance of having someone helping you "from home".

Im from Copenhagen, Denmark and have been fascinated with the AT for about two years now.

Lyle

Hi all,

Does anybody have any good ideas what to do when you have absolutely no chance of having someone helping you "from home".

Hello, Welcome to White Blaze.

Rest assured, there is no real need for assistance from home. It's nice to have the support and the occasional "Care" package, but there are adequate services available to take care of all your needs. If you desire a food drop or something at a given location, you just need to plan ahead for a town or two, and send it to yourself.

I'm planning to semi-retire in Sept. of 2013, and will probably be on either the PCT or AT come the following spring. I have to finish up from Culver's Gap in NJ to Katadin between now and then. Not sure if I'll want to repeat the AT via a Thru, or move on to the PCT.

So many trails, so little time!

Good luck to all, maybe I'll be joining you.

Planning to start early March 2014 (as long as sabbatical is approved) NOBO from Springer. Have already section hiked from Springer to Newfound Gap to get a good idea of what it is like (including GSMNP in below freezing snow & ice earlier this month). Prefer warmer weather, but now know I can handle the cold also. Also planning to attend the ATI in May.

A multi-year Big Adventure is in the works. The shock of realizing I am suddenly middle aged, divorced, and broke, and essentially no better off than I was in my twenties has caused me to reevaluate life's priorities. All personal progress over the last twenty years has been effectively nullified. Hell, I'm not going to waste another twenty years (assuming I live that long...you never know). It's time to make life worth living!

The Plan, Part 1: Demolish debt, save money, and get my crap together. Amazing progress is being made once I finally focused on what I really wanted.
The Plan, part 2: Start the AT April-ish 2014. I'm not the fastest hiker, and don't expect to be speeding through. I would not be surprised if I never broke the 20 mile/day threshold.
The Plan, Part 3: After completing the AT (my poor overweight and out of shape body permitting), take off on the sailboat for two or three years. If I finish the trail b October, I should be sailing away by the end of November. Time for some aquatic adventurin'!
The Plan, Part 4: Dammit; but eventually the bank account will run dry and I will have to re-enter the world of employment. Not looking forward to this part.

Well your Moon isn't ending anytime soon. :)
Welcome to WhiteBlaze posting!

I have a tentative Mar '14 departure.
I am certainly NOT planning a speed hike, rather taking my sweet time.
Therefore, there will be little to no 20 mile days for me.

Hope your plans work out and look forward to meeting you on the trail!

Is it wise to plan for equipment now for a 2014 NOBO hike or wait for upgraded and improved gear?

Winds
05-20-2012, 13:45
Is it wise to plan for equipment now for a 2014 NOBO hike or wait for upgraded and improved gear?

That might depend on the depth of one's homework?

There are many variables to consider. For example: Are shoes going to advance so much in 2 years that I shouldn't NOW grab 2 pair of Merrell Moab Mid-Ventilators for $80 a pair at REI soon? My tentative shoe plan with camp shoes NOW may cost me less than $200 - if I wait a couple of years will that increase to over $400??

For me, I think I will continue to learn and buy gear along the way as I see the best fit for me / my goals and hopefully save time and money.

It's a good question though House, as many things the cost WILL increase and potentially the quality MAY decrease. One aspect of a thru-hike is that we will want quality gear.

I just discovered the Class of 2014 thread and thought I'd throw my hat in the ring. I'm not retiring, just fed up with sitting in a cube. I'm working my butt off to save as much $$$ as possible to make this a reality. Was originally planning on 2015 but that just seems too damn far away, so I said Eff it, why not 2014?

And here I am.

Unless I get seduced by the Osprey, I'll be the dude with the bad-ass external-frame pack out there. See ya then!

Hmmm... Tomorrow, July 10th, would mark 20 months until I wander through the arch at Amicalola Falls State Park and start the approach trail. I've got a lot to do between now and then, but I'm wondering if it's too soon to start my trail journal. How obnoxious would it be to have like fifty or sixty 'prep' entries before I start walkin'? I say this because I was initially going to wait until it was exactly a year off, but I'm thinking about my first gear-shakedown trip this weekend.

Yep, 2014 is the plan for me right now. Still a lot of planning in the works, trying to time everything right.

I'm still up in the air about trying to start early (late Feb/early Mar) or start later (second week of May). Both have advantages and disadvantages. Part of what's driving my two options is only wanting to take one semester off. Leaving in early March would mean spring semester off but done in time for fall semester start in late Aug. Leaving in May would mean I could complete spring semester but would mean I would have to doing a lot of long mileage days with very few zero days to not risk running out of time/good weather.

I guess we'll see. I thought about a 2013 hike, but decided I need the extra year for prep-time, saving money, etc.

It's nice to see a group of people already dreaming/planning for hiking in 2014. Seems like a long way off, but it will be here quickly. Hope to see some of you all on the trail!

My step-daughter and I will be hiking the AT in 2014, start date around 4.1.14, we will start at Springer and head north. Our plan is to take the train from Idaho to Georgia. We are already doing small backpacking trips, we will continue to hike during the winter (never know what the mountains along the AT will bring) we want to be prepared. I will be taking a leave of absents from my job as a RN. We are currently looking at Ultralight tents and packs, have a few in mind right now. We will be dehydrating our own food and having a family member ship it out for us. Not sure what my step-daughters trail name will be, but look for Baby Face Nelson (that will be me).

What a joy for me when I realised I was retired and could make a thru hike! So March 2014 hopefully will find me on Springer headed north. Lots of work to do between now and then, and this site certainly helps with getting ready!

Hi, everyone!
I'm planning a 2014 thru hike, and looking for some feedback on my gear list. I'm trying to stay light, but comfortable. The items marked with XXXX are ones that I already own. Also, I forgot to add little things like first aid kit, TP, a lighter, and duct tape on the list, but those are all relatively light and take up little space (tape around a water bottle, etc). I'm kind of thrilled about the base weight under 20#...and I'm sure I could go lighter--example: the pack. I know it's heavy, but it fits me *so well* and is *so comfortable* so I know it will compensate for it's heft. Also, I'm hoping to keep gear purchases under $1500.

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0By5mI8iU6CEAc1QwYWlMY2t6Ync/edit

Any feedback? Additions? Subtractions?

Thanks, everyone! I can't wait to see you out on the trail!

Hi Catie Rae,

Welcome to the Class of 2014 and welcome to Whiteblaze!

I could not open your gear list link above due to: "Access not allowed"

Maybe fix the link or access??

Hey, Wind, thanks for letting me know about the link. I have no idea why it won't work, so I'll just post my list here...I've changes some things and made some purchases since I originally posted, anyway.

Also, I didn't mention that I am hiking SOBO, which explains the lack of cold weather gear and a zero degree bag to start. A lot of my gear isn't top of the line, and if it totally falls apart a few months into the hike, I'm okay with that and prepared to replace it. I would just rather not buy anything that I don't *need* to before I head out...also, I know I will get a better picture of what I'll actually want/need/use once I'm out there for a while.

Without further ado:
Gear
Gregory Deva 60 (5 lbs 11 oz)*
Gregory Pack Cover (4.8 oz)
Tarp Tent Notch (26 oz)

Carol, welcome to our year!

Catie Rae, I'm not the best to pick apart gear lists PLUS I may be rather unconventional. There are MANY gear postings that will tear that apart though. You can search in this forum for "Gear List" and the like to get more help.

Registry for 2014 should open in April. All you have to do is look when the 2013 registry was opened. It was 4/11/12, so 2014 folks should have the registry opened in April. I too hope to be a 2014er or if circumstances change a 2015er.

Last year's class is any indication of when they start next years?? Wow.

It's just another issue fallen in between the cracks of reason within this site.

MANY people who plan a thru-hike are planners.

It would be only reasonable to have our group available within 12 months of actually leaving for what to many of us will be the longest [and hopefully greatest] adventure of our lives.

This site wants to be successful.
This site needs hikers who are enthusiastic about posting here.

Laying out the structure for 2-3 years in advanced is NOT unreasonable and will only get more people participating.

I've been a donating member up until January this year. I'd like to continue to support this site, IF I'm still here that is.
:)

I'm gonna give it a go, I believe in 2014. Planning on May 1, NOBO, i am retiring. but I may get impatient and go earlier. I've done many miles on AT. Have always had to work May to October so a true thru hike was never realistic before now.
My gear is ever changing I have 4 of everything depending on weather. But I will likely take this
Pack : go-light dawn 13z
Bed: neoair 11z
Bag: golite ultra 20 19z
Stove: msr whisper lite 11z
Fuel: 3oz
Filtration:aquamira 2 oz
UL Down jacket: 9 z
Socks 3 pair = 9 oz
Tent : BA fly creek 29z
Hat: 7 oz
Toothbrush 3z
Toothpaste 3z
Toilet paper 2 oz
Spork 2oz
Cup/pan 5oz
Rain shirt /jacket 3 oz
This is strictly what's in my pack. I don't carry extra clothes or soap, or batteries or extra fuel or medical stuff or anything. I am plenty ok on very little physical comfort, though I indulge in town.
Im pretty gruesome to smell and will likely pick up a t shirt to wear in town, but with such a small pack choices must be made.
I wear my headlamp, and carry my lighter and cell phone. This pack I listed is 8 lbs, which is low for me, but I'm usually in the 8lb (summer) and 12lb range (winter).

Im looking forward to this, hope I'm up to the challenge.

I'm in the 14ers too. Been researching and gathering gear and reading here.

I've NEVER backpacked overnight before, but I've car camped and kayak camped and day hiked. I'm going to spend this year testing my gear....starting with the Katy Bike Trail (yes, I'm going bikamping), and then maybe the C&O Canal and Towpath + Great Allegheny Passage (not sure if I want to hoof it or bike it yet), then up into the adirondacks to mess around up there (hiking, biking, kayaking) and basically testing my gear and me. Plan on putting in some long day hikes, then build up to carrying a full pack on a day hike....then some overnighters.

Haven't chosen my tip-off date. Hope to meet great people along the way.

I've got my Wonderful wifes blessing & I am considering a Sobo Adventure starting just after the 4th of July. Considering because I'm not sure if I want to walk away from my Real Estate Business for 4 or 5 months? I will evaluate it next year & make a decision a few month prior too. I don't plan on any mail drops so I can leave at a moments notice.

My original plan when I retired in 2006 was to Thru Hike in 2014 since I'll turn 70 in early October and wanted to do so at Katahdin. I'm doing 1/2 the Trail this summer and will make my decision if I re-hike the Northern section next year or if I just hike the AT in 2 sections.

At this point, I'm tossing my hat in as a Thru Hiker in 2014.

I'm planning on starting in early March 2014. Have been collecting or making gear for the last months. Been reading everything I can get my hands on. Dehydrating food and weighing EVERYTHING. Have become a Ray Jardine disciple of sorts. Hope to get several week long gear shake down hikes in between now and then. Still getting over some minor knee surgery but that's not going to keep down. Have got my pack weight down to 24 lbs excluding the camera I just ordered and food. That does include my cold weather gear that I will need in March and possible April. Then I can mail 3-5 lbs home until I hit NH. At least that's the plan.

Hello, I am a 2014er and I plan to do a solo SOBO ala the "Cool Breeze" itinerary, a modified thru-hike with two leaps. Start at CT/NY late April hike to VA leap to Maine then hike to CT/NY, then leap down to VA and spent the fall in the southern third and end up at Springer sometime in Nov. enjoying the foliage. I also will be hammocking along the way. Spring in the Mid Atlantic Summer in the Whites and Presidentials and Fall in the South.

April 1st of next year is my target date to leave Springer Mtn. Back in '98 the wife and I sectioned hike from Springer to the High Lands of VA. So for this coming next year I have to get into SHAPE, lose 50 lbs and gain a few muscles. See you on the trail.

Also plan on throwing my hat in for a 2014 thru. Hoping to start April 1. Any one in the New England area looking for some company on some weekend backpacking trips over summer send a private message. I'll mostly be trying to finish up the NH 4Ks and dialing in my gear list.

Retired as of this past April. Will be attempting a solo SOBO 1st week of June 2014. My plan is for a very slow stroll down the AT. I anticipate being out for a full calendar year (June 2014-June 2015) I've got years of 4 season & wilderness survival experience under my belt, so the winter months are not a big concern. Was a tenter/ground sleeper for yrs, but just got my Hennessy Hammock & will be 'hanging' from here on out! Best sleep in the woods ever, IMHO...and proper rest is the most important aspect for me. Look forward to meeting as many of you as possible out there!
