Looking at the location of the failed tank on Google Earth it doesn't appear that it should have any impact on the trail. If you "fly' to the Gatlinburg Welcome Center you will be able to see the tanks.

Poor guys that are missing :(

That is just about the worst possible death that I can imagine. I hope they are OK, just trapped somewhere.

Often during really heavy rains sewage is bypassed at treatment plants and goes in to streams and rivers with little to no treatment. Downstream there's probably a plant treating that same stream for municipal water. It happens everywhere.
