Here's an evolving gear list for my upcoming 2011 thru-hike.

Storage--------
Golite Gust with foam back pad removed (<20oz)
various silnylon stuff sacks for food, clothes, kitchen, etc
a few ziplock bags
clear heavy duty trash bag as a pack liner

Shelter--------
MLD Cuban Grace Solo
MLD Bug net
2 Walmart trekking poles with camlocks (double as tarp supports)
thin plastic ground cloth (window film)

Sleeping--------
Marmot Helium
silk liner
thermarest 3/4 pad (doubles as pack support)
small piece of anti-slip pad

Kitchen---------
cat stove
water bottle for fuel
REI 0.9L ti pan with lid
Simple reflectix cozy for the pan
minibic lighter
foil windscreen
old pair of chopsticks
small plastic cup
reusable tea bag
camp towel

Hygiene---------
Dr. Bronners liquid soap (in a small bottle)
a little hand sanitizer
dental floss
toothbrush and a little baking soda
medicated powder in ziplock
toilet paper in baggie
old aluminum stake for cat holes

First aid----------
bandaids
pills (a couple of each): ibuprofen, antihistamine, antidiarreal, pain killers
superglue
duct tape
2x2s
a little bit of clotting powder
multivitamins

Water system------
2 liter platypus
1 liter platypus
bite tube
Sawyer inline filter and backflush adapter
Chlorine Dioxide tablets (backup)
(still need a way to pre-filter)

Miscellaneous-----
leatherman micra
DEET
sample-size bottle of sunblock (spf50)
single LED keychain light
plastic whistle
mini compass/thermometer
2 mini caribiners
Lightmyfire scout
trail guide, companion
driver's license, atm card, a little cash, all in a small ziplock

Electronics-----
small Cannon ixy, charger and spare sd card
Kindle and charger in a ziplock bag (field guides, study material, lit, etc.)
old creative zen mp3 player and earbuds

Clothing-----
REI convertibles (might switch these out for asics running shorts)
Columbia 'titanium' t-shirt (synthetic)
2 pairs of socks
NB running shoes
long underwear (synthetic)
bandana
lightweight cap and glove liners
(no thermal layer yet)
(no wind/rain protection yet) - any advice?

Concerns:
Unsure what to do for warmth, rain protection
Down bag under a solo tarp in a storm (bivy maybe? a piece of plastic?)
Calling home if the need arises. Are there payphones in trail towns?
What do people do about bugs on hot days if they only have running shorts and maybe a pair rain pants?
Things I've forgotten
Pack weight

Any and all input is appreciated. This is my first attempt at a thru-hike and all of my previous mountain hikes were 6 days or less. Thanks!

When do you leave? Are you NOBO or SOBO?

My hubby likes his dri ducks for rain (or Frogg Togg) I wear precip
You can usually find a pay phone in towns except there is none in Salisbury CT for some reason.
Might consider just Aqua Mira for water rx and leave the rest home
Do you have a headlamp? Bear bag gear
Not sure I'd bring something that $$ like a Kindle, personally. I broke my camera in the Whites. Also it will never stay dry in just a Ziploc. If you are going to carry it, I'd get its own waterproof case or small drybag.
I always bring three pairs of socks to take care of my feet.
Good luck on Wal mart poles holding up all the way

I'm going to give the dri ducks a try. As for the water, I'm considering just bringing something like aqua mira or polar pur, but I'm not sure I'm ready to give up the convenience of the Sawyer just yet (no wait time). 3 pairs of socks sounds like a good idea too.

I forgot to list my old zipka headlamp, but it will be packed too as it's much better for night hiking than the single led one. I'll add some nylon rope to use with my food bag for bear bagging purposes.

The walmart poles (outdoor research group, I think) have held up surprisingly well considering their cost. The camlocks are pretty robust. But, if they start to give, I'll substitute a couple sticks and pack them out.

Thanks for the solid advice!

I can't find the 'edit' button so...

The kindle will come along as I do plan on studying a little bit every day and it replaces quite a few books and documents. It's a calculated risk I'm willing to take to avoid the expense and hassle of mail drops and bounce boxes for my study materials.

And, I'm planning a '2011 NOBO...' ;)
