just to make ice in hostels or do they have ice cube trays?

I've only met one person who was able to make ice on the trail, but he carried a heavy canvas cover for his tray. Said they used to use evaporative cooling to make ice in 'Nam.

If you cut your ice cube tray in half so you have two 2x3 trays, they fit more easily into your blender and take up less pack space.
Do you filter or treat your ice cube water?

I drill holes in my cuben fiber ice cube tray to save weight.

Nope,
I've learned it's much more efficient to just freeze dry my ice cubes ahead of time. It sure beats hauling along the mini fridge and generator like I used to.
A friend of mine is "backyard testing" a method that looks promising. He drilled a bunch of holes in his trays to lighten em up. Haven't heard from him in a while, said he'd be getting back to me to let me know how the first batch turned out. I'll let ya know.....

it's the responsibility of every hostel to provide any thru-hiker with all the ice they want, just for gracing the hostel with their presence. also at any road crosssing there's supposed to be a cooler with ice just for you.

I plan to mobilize an army of volunteer Ice Angels to be at every major road crossing along the AT this summer to provide hikers with all the ice they want. Just my way of paying forward ...
Just use the corner of a baggie, put in freezer, cool shaped ice :)

I started hiking in mid Feb this year so I would not need to carry ice cube trays. Just my luck, it was warm and sunny nearly all the rest of that month. Gonna have to start in January next year,
My pack has an icemaker...
Darn, you stole my idea for next year's April Fools thread!
Well now if you pick up a chunk of dry ice at the super store put it in one of those insulated lunch sacks, then you can freeze up some ice cubes at camp. It would be quite nice to drop a few cubes in that glass of "Old #7" while watching the sun go down, yep sure would be nice. Better ling through chemistry. :sun
