Continuing where we left off last fall, when me and two buddies went from Amicalola Falls to Neel's Gap. Last week, March 26 (Sat), we put in at Neels Gap and made it to Deep Gap in NC by Wednesday that week. Cold wet and rainy most of the time...but loved it nonetheless...Already itching to go back and continue. Met and talked to many thru hikers-hope they all make it.

Congratulations on knocking out your first State. I remember how ecstatic I was when I hit the Georgia line.

I did roughly the same hike in October last year (started at Woody), ALSO in the rain the whole way... I can't wait to get back out there. Congratulations!

congrats. I am starting May 1 NOBO to finish GA, how many miles did you average?

For me, it was 63 miles in 6 days this time. I had significant knee pain from Spinger to Woody the previous trip and I didn't do very many miles... I'm sure that MANY others will tell you to take it easy, don't try to go too far too fast (me the first time) and enjoy the trip. The Georgia AT can be very humbling; I have experienced it myself.

any bear activity for you guys between Blood Mtn and Neel's?

Bear activity at both Wood's Hole Shelter and Blood Mountain Shelter. The bear even entered the Blood Mountain Shelter front room April 4th while everyone was asleep in the back room. Best thing to do is go on down to Neels Gap and spend the night.

Thanks for all the great words! No bears seen...wanted to see one. NOT have an encounter, but would like to have seen one. On both outings we went about 8 miles the first day with a late start on the morning...2nd day about 10 miles and by 3rd day about 12 miles each day. I could see how one could work up to 15 or 16 a day without much trouble. That is an early start and stopping for some snack and meal breaks and about a 5:30 stop for camp, I guess.
I did discover the georgia patch and have sent off for it. I, too wish each state or each maintenance club had a patch for their section.
To "hikes in rain" and "MkBibble" What are the best 2-3 nighter hikes that you know of between you and the south Mississippi area. We have the Black Creek Trail of which I plan a thru hike soon (41 miles). I have done Juniper Creek in the Fla panhandle as a dayhike last summer. Just curious what you might say. Its an 8 hr plus drive back to the AT. Logistics get harder the more of it I hike.
...again "Thanks" everyone.

blackwater slim, i really don't know much about any of the other trails. the lone star hiking trail is 96 miles long; i've only walked a tiny bit of it. it is NOT the AT, that's for sure! but, i guess it beats sitting at a desk... i have heard a lot of good things about the trails up in the ozarks; that's a lot closer to you. don't know about you, but i'm pretty hooked on the AT.
mynameisgeorgel, good luck and HAVE FUN!
